By Veronica Chiarelli

If you're not looking to go for a fully-electric vehicle, then a hybrid gives some of the benefits, whilst keeping hold of the familiar internal combustion engine. Due to high interest, manufacturers now offer a comprehensive range of both mild hybrid and plug-in hybrid models to cater to all lifestyles.

In this articles, we list our top 10 hybrid vehicles, which cater to varying needs.

Kia Niro

The great thing about this family SUV is that you can choose between the hybrid (HEV) or plug-in hybrid (PHEV) versions of the Kia Niro. Both use a 1.6-litre petrol engine paired with an electric motor, but the PHEV model has a significantly larger battery (11.1kWh) and offers a total electric range of up to 40 miles, depending on the trim.

Because of the larger battery, and the nature of the PHEV, it needs to be plugged in to recharge. It takes 2 hours 28 minutes to do so, when using a 3.6kW home charger. However, the HEV (hybrid) doesn't require plugging in due to its self charging nature.

Space and practicality are strong points for the Niro. For the HEV, boot capacity is 451 litres with the rear seats up. The PHEV, due to its larger battery, has a smaller boot of 348 litres. Both versions can tow a braked trailer up to 1,300kg, making them capable for many family-tow applications.

Hyundai TUCSON

A mid-size SUV that’s comfortable, spacious, and available with multiple hybrid powertrains, the Hyundai TUCSON is an excellent choice for families. You can choose from mild hybrid, full hybrid, or plug-in hybrid versions, with the latter offering an electric-only range of 38 to 43 miles on a single charge.

The main difference between the hybrid and plug-in hybrid models is whether they need to be charged. As the name suggests, the plug-in hybrids must be connected to a power source, either a standard 3-pin socket or wallbox, and can be fully recharged in around 2 hours using a fast AC charger.

The mild hybrid models are self-charging, meaning they don’t require plugging in. They use regenerative braking, a system that converts kinetic energy produced during deceleration into electricity to recharge the battery.

When it comes to practicality, the TUCSON offers a spacious cabin that comfortably accommodates up to five passengers. The boot capacity ranges from 558 to 616 litres, depending on the model, providing more than enough space for everyday needs and larger items alike.
