Used Vauxhall Astra for sale

The Vauxhall Astra has been a household hatchback for many generations. First appearing in 1980, some generations are forgettable whilst others - particularly the fifth generation, gave the car some much-needed flair.

This eighth generation, which was available from 2021 shows a radical evolution from the seventh generation, showcasing a much slicker, premium look and feel.

Other stand-out features include:

  • A decent driving experience
  • An impressive interior vibe
  • Petrol, diesel, PHEV and fully-electric versions
  • Good economy
  • Excellent boot space

Engines and Driving Experience

Vauxhall Astra

With the Vauxhall Astra being around for generations, many may forget it's been on sale for longer than its main rivals, with the Ford Focus only appearing on the scene in the late '90s.

In this eighth generation, it looks to leave no room for rivals to take advantage, as it offers pretty much all engine options, in petrol, diesel, PHEV and fully-electric.

Two 1.2-litre 3-cylinder petrol engines kick off the range with either 128bhp or the entry-level 108bhp version. The former is shared with the Peugeot 308.

Performance isn't rapid, but the engine shared with the Peugeot (Stellantis group) goes from 0 to 62mph in just under 10 seconds.

The PHEV versions are more lively with a 177bhp/222bhp 1.6-cylinder 4-cylinder and electric input, dropping the 0 to 62mph time to circa 7.5 seconds. The fully-electric version isn't as quick, but does provide a relaxing and almost silent drive.

Talking of the driving experience, the Astra on the whole is pretty decent and much improved from the seventh generation.

Practicality and Running Costs

Vauxhall Astra

With 5-doors as standard, the Vauxhall Astra is a practical car, but then again, it's never really lacked in this department.

In this particular eighth generation, there's also lots of useful cabin space and extra storage, with plenty of cubbies and pockets.

A 422-litre boot is offer too, which increases to 1,389 litres with the rear seats folded. It's worth noting that in the PHEV and electric versions boot space drops to 352 litres, and 1,368 litres with the rear seat folded. This is due to the space being used by the extra electrical components.

Economy and general running costs are decent, with between 48 and 67mpg achievable, with the electric version increasing these figures a lot further.

Servicing is good value and straight forward, and can be taken care of by your preferred Evans Halshaw Vauxhall retailer.

Interior, Technology and Safety

Vauxhall Astra

Vauxhall have been generous with the interior quality, tech, and safety features on this generation of Astra.

No matter which trim you go for, you'll get digital dials and a smart infotainment screen as standard. Some competitors still use analogue dials in entry-level trims, so fair play to Vauxhall for offering them as standard.

Move up the range though, and you'll just get nicer things and higher levels of kit, as expected.

Safety scores are now harder to achieve with more modern cars, and therefore the Astra got four stars with Euro NCAP. Possibly because some kit is optional. However, there's still great features in the range, which include:

  • Traffic sign recognition
  • Lane positioning assist
  • Rear cross traffic alert
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • LED headlights

Is the Vauxhall Astra right for me?

This eighth generation of the Vauxhall Astra is an impressive step up from the seventh generation. It's more mature, more stylish and offers generous amounts of kit.

It has always received stiff competition in this class though, from the likes of the Ford Focus - which has always been a family favourite, and has always offered a great driving experience.

The VW Golf is arguably the best of the bunch, with its superb build quality and its textbook reputation.

Either way, this particular Astra now gives consumers a different angle, offered at a more affordable price point.
