Used Vauxhall ADAM for sale
Originally launched in 2012, the ADAM was met with critical acclaim because Vauxhall had essentially created a blank canvas on which customers could paint their own style and design. Basically, this was a stylish supermini that had been built for style-focused people.
Underneath the glam was an accomplished supermini that was brimming with desirable technologies and useful features. Add in the low running costs, and sure enough, the ADAM became a popular choice among motorists. Production for the ADAM ended in 2019, but there are plenty to choose from on the used car market. Here's why you should consider one:
- Stylish and quirky
- Good equipment levels
- Easy to drive around town
- Low running costs
- Established choice of engines
Engines and Driving Experience
The ADAM is unlikely to deliver high-octane thrills, but it will certainly offer plenty of grip and reassuring stability over harsher surfaces. It'll also feel agile, which is partly in thanks to the quick steering and low kerb weight.
Engines came courtesy of the established Corsa, with a choice of petrol options made available (there are no diesels unfortunately). The entry-level unit is a 1.2-litre that produces 69bhp; it isn't particularly fast, but you should see north of 55mpg pretty easily.
A bigger 1.4-litre is available in three outputs: 86, 99 and 148bhp respectively. The most powerful variant recruits a turbocharger and is reserved for the sportier version. Expect similar fuel economy to the 1.2-litre engine.
Finally, a 1.0-litre turbocharged 3-cylinder petrol motor is available. It can return up 57.6mpg and offers plenty of flexibility in the middle of the rev-range.
Practicality and Running Costs
If we're being completely honest, the ADAM isn't the most practical car in the world. That's not to say it's completely devoid of any useful features though. After all, you can get two adults in the back for shorter journeys, while the 170-litre boot space can still accommodate your weekly shop.
The ADAM is only available as a three-door, which although looks good, can make it a bit trickier to fit a child's seat compared to a five-door vehicle. Bar that, there is a decent room up front for the driver and passenger, while storage compartments are in abundance.
Sharing engines with the Corsa makes servicing and running costs very reasonable; it also keeps the insurance group super-low (bar the sportier 'S'). Any maintenance can be completed by Evans Halshaw Vauxhall, with discounts of up to 25% available to those who sign up to Vauxhall Service Club.
Interior, Technology and Safety
Despite the reasonable price tag, the ADAM's interior design and materials have a premium edge that wouldn't look out of place on more expensive motors. There are four models to choose from: Jam, Glam, Slam and Energised.
The first three models could be designed with a ton of unique extras. If you want something more sedate, then go for the Energised model, which was essentially a ready-made Jam without any customisation.
Air-conditioning, steering wheel controls, cruise control and Bluetooth connectivity feature as standard. Move up the range and goodies, such as climate control, DAB radio, and a panoramic sunroof, are unlocked. The top-level Slam is distinguished by styling tweaks that include sports suspension, tinted rear windows, and 17-inch alloy wheels.
The ADAM scored high for occupant safety, and features the following:
- Six airbags
- Stability control
- Speed limiter
- Hill-start assist
- Traction control
Is the Vauxhall ADAM right for me?
You'd be hard-pushed to go wrong with the ADAM if you're conscious about style and want a car that has plenty of character. The flexible engine choices and inexpensive running costs make the whole package more appetising.
There's no denying the fact the ADAM isn't the most practical car in the world, so you may want to consider the equally stylish MINI Hatchback, which has a slightly bigger boot and also happens to be available with five-doors.
An Audi A1 is a good shout and boasts a more premium interior, although you should take a look at the DS 3 if you want character and good value.
