Used Volkswagen Golf for sale

The Volkswagen Golf is arguably one of the most recognisable family hatchbacks on Britain's roads, and that's because of its all-round qualities, as well as its ability to appeal to just about anyone.

Really though, the popularity of the Golf should come as no great surprise. After all, it's been a consistent mainstay within the Volkswagen range for generations.

Although the Golf is renowned for offering a premium build quality without the price tag to match, there are a number of other reasons it's a popular used car purchase:

  • Efficient range of engines
  • Ergonomic storage
  • Superb practicality
  • Classless image
  • Impressive performance models

Engines and Driving Experience

A 1.0-litre TSI petrol and 1.6-litre TDI diesel engine are the entry-level choices. Neither will set your pulse racing, but they offer excellent usability and fuel economy, with over 60 mpg (miles per gallon) regularly achievable.

In the middle of the range you have the 1.5-litre TSI EVO petrol unit lining up alongside the established 2.0-litre TDI diesel engine; both offer strong in-gear acceleration and are quiet on the motorway.

Although a manual gearbox is standard across the range, it's the slick automatic DSG (direct-shift gearbox) that steals the show with its ability to change gear seamlessly while improving the Golf's efficiency.

The entire Golf range offers a sure-footed and refined driving experience, with genuine thrills available in the likes of the GTI and R, which are performance variants that produce 230 and 310bhp respectively. There's even a plug-in hybrid, called the GTE, if you fancy going greener.

Practicality and Running Costs

The regular hatchback body style is the most popular, although an estate is available if you need the extra space. Most Golfs come with five doors, which is ideal for young families; but three door examples aren't hard to find if you don't need the extra practicality.

Boot space is very good across the range; the hatchback offers 380 litres with the rear seats folded up and the estate offers an impressive 605 litres. The GTE has to sacrifice boot space to accommodate the batteries (278 litres), but it's a small price to pay for greener driving and lower running costs.

Throughout the majority of the range, the insurance group for the Golf never goes above 20 (50 being the highest), although the GTI and R are higher because of their performance. Servicing and tyres are very reasonable and no higher than any other family hatchback.

Interior, Technology and Safety

The Volkswagen Golf boasts one of the best interiors in its class, with quality materials having been used throughout and a class-leading infotainment system taking centre stage.

Bar the exception of the entry-level 'S' model, the Golf can easily connect to your smartphone via Android Auto or Apple CarPlay. This allows for intuitive and slick connectivity with your device while you're on the move.

Volkswagen Golf is available with the following driver assistance systems, depending on the selected model:

  • Traffic Jam Assist
  • Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Predictive Pedestrian Protection
  • Trailer Assist including Park Assist

A configurable, interactive 12.3-inch display can be found in place of the traditional instrument cluster on higher-end models, and can be customised to show useful features such as the satellite navigation.

Is the Volkswagen Golf right for me?

Overall, the Volkswagen Golf is a fantastic all-rounder and has plenty to offer anyone who needs a quality family hatchback that doesn't command a premium price tag. The extensive range of engines means the Golf will appeal to everyone, while the affordable running costs make them all the more appetising.

If you're after something that is more premium, then you may want to consider the Audi A3 or BMW 1 Series. Alternatively, if you want a car that's more affordable to own and is still brilliant to drive, then you won't go wrong with the Ford Focus.
