Used BMW M5 CS for sale
The BMW 5 Series has been setting the standard for dynamic luxury saloons since 1972. But with the birth of the iconic M division in the same year, it was a safe bet to see a high performance 5 Series M in due course. With the very first M car, the M1, coming along in 1978, it was not until 1984 until the M division unveiled the first M5.
Fast-forward to 2017 and the introduction of the F90 M5 offered 0 to 62mph in 3.4 seconds thanks to its 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8. However, BMW M have a habit of enhancing their standard M models, so after a Competition model came along in 2018, the halo CS completed the trio in and in 2021.
With distinct gold detailing, gold wheels, and bucket seats not just in the front, but in the rear too - not to mention Nürburgring motifs on the seats too - the M5 CS showcased all the right ingredients. In short, then, why should you consider one:
- It is the most hardcore M5 ever
- Lighter and more focused than the M5 Competition
- Exclusivity
- Ultra fast
- Still really practical
- Incredible chassis
Engines and Driving Experience
The engine in the F90 BMW M5 is the 'S63' 4.4-litre turbo V8, which produces 616bhp. It is the same unit in the CS, however, it has been boosted further by 10bhp, resulting in 626bhp. Not a massive step-up, but enough to drop the 0 to 62mph time to just 3.0-seconds, which is 0.4 seconds faster than the standard F90 M5, and 0.3 seconds faster than the M5 Competition.
It is also 70kg lighter than the M5 Competition, and feels sharper to drive than that of the standard car and Competition. But the real genius is the M5 CS' lies beneath it. It uses the adaptive dampers from its M8 Gran Coupé sibling, along with a drop in ride height. Add in a reworking of the car's chassis geometry, and you have the ultimate F90 BMW M5 variant by quite a margin.
You will stop just as good too, as the M5 CS features carbon ceramic brakes, and it also comes as standard with all-wheel drive. But do not worry if you think that will dial back the classic BMW rear-wheel drive vibe, as you can select a rear-wheel drive mode, too, giving the best of both worlds.
Practicality and Running Costs
Essentially, the M5 CS is based heavily on the BMW 5 Series, albeit enhanced in many areas, but the blueprint is rather similar. Therefore, practicality is decent with 5-doors as standard, four seats - all bucket seats (standard M5 has five seats), and a large 530-litre boot - which is the same as the standard M5, M5 Competition and standard BMW 5 Series.
As for running costs, as this is the sharpest F90 BMW M5 available, and the most performance focused, it will be the most expensive to run out the 5 Series and M5 variants - but obviously, it will provide the biggest grins.
Servicing for such a car as the M5 CS is advised to be completed at an official BMW retailer, such as Stratstone BMW.
Interior, Technology, and Safety
Bucket seats not just in the front, but also in the rear tells you all you need to know about the hardcore M5 CS. This is a car for those who love driving, along with three excited passengers, who will be snug in body hugging seats which feature the infamous Nürburgring Nordschleife.
The technology is excellent, as you would expect too, with BMW Live Cockpit Professional, which comprises of a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment display, and 12.3-inch digital instriment set-up too. Premium audio from Harman Kardon and wireless charging, along with various M driving modes ensure you can tailor your M5 CS on every drive with ease.
There is also masses of safety features, including lane departure warning, blind spot detection, rear cross traffic alert, along with frontal collision and pedestrian warning.
Is the BMW 1 Series right for me?
A standard BMW M5 is a superb super saloon, and will impress tenfold, whether it is the standard car, or the Competition. However, if you want the very best, and arguably finest M5 ever created, the CS is the pinnacle in the M5 lineage.
The newer BMW M5 adds in plug-in hybrid technology and takes the technology that little bit further, but for the hardcore petrolheads out there, the M5 CS is more of an analogue experience than the later G Series M cars, as is the case with many F series M cars, like the F87 M2 and F82 M4.
If you find the G Series BMW models more radical, and prefer a more old school feel, then the CS is quite simply the sharpest M5 ever, making rivals like the Audi RS 6 and Mercedes-AMG E63 S seem a little blunt in comparison.
