The Audi A3 is a premium mid-sized family car that offers an upmarket driving experience alongside a host of advanced technology.

With such strong competition in this segment, which includes the likes of the Mercedes-Benz A-Class and BMW 1 Series, the A3 doesn't have it easy by any stretch of the imagination. However, a class-leading interior design and a good choice of bodystyles mean the A3 remains a firm favourite among motorists.

Reasons to consider an Audi A3 as your next used car include:

  • Stunning appearance
  • Excellent interior design and quality
  • Big boot
  • Efficient engines choices, including a plug-in hybrid (PHEV)
  • Properly quick S3 model

Engines and Driving Experience

The A3 is a comfortable car to drive, and is perfect for dealing with Britain's roads. The chassis produces plenty of grip, which is further enhanced by models with Audi's legendary Quattro all-wheel drive system.

Petrol / Hybrid

  • 30 TFSI: 1.0-litre producing 109bhp (0 to 62mph in 10.6 seconds and up to 51.4mpg)
  • 35 TFSI: 1.5-litre producing 148bhp (0 to 62mph in 8.7 seconds and up to 48.7mpg)
  • 40 TFSI e plug-in hybrid: 1.4-litre producing 201bhp (0 to 62mph in 7.6seconds and up to 282.5mpg with fully charged batteries)
  • 40 TFSI e plug-in hybrid: 1.4-litre producing 238bhp (0 to 62mph in 6.8 seconds and up to 235.4mpg with fully charged batteries)

Diesel

  • 30 TDI: 2.0-litre producing 114bhp (0 to 62mph in 10.1 seconds and up to 61.4mpg)
  • 35 TDI: 2.0-litre producing 148bhp (0 to 62mph in 8.5 seconds and up to 64.2mpg)

If you want something punchier, then there's the Audi S3, which recruits a turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol engine that produces 306bhp.

Practicality and Running Costs

Audi A3 boot

The A3 is available in two bodystyles: Sportback and Saloon. Audi ditched the option for three doors with the generation you see here, so you can only have a 5-door A3. This does at least grant convenient access to the rear of the car when fitting a child's seat.

Despite being slightly bigger than the previous model, the A3 still has a 380-litre boot. However, that's on the money for this class of car, with the Mercedes-Benz A-Class and BMW 1 Series offering similar sized boots. Naturally, you can fold the rear seats flat to create a handy 1,200 litres of luggage capacity.

Annual premiums should be pretty reasonable given that all A3 models (except the S3) don't exceed insurance group 26 (50 being the highest). Affordable servicing is available through all Evans Halshaw retailers, with tailored service plans available to help you spread the cost of maintenance.

Interior, Technology and Safety

A key selling point of the A3 has always been its upmarket interior, which is beautifully designed and lavish throughout. The central infotainment screen looks stunning, and offers seamless navigation of the menus.

Entry-level Technik models are well-equipped, with 16-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights and a 10.1-inch touchscreen featuring as standard. You also get the brand's 10.25-inch Virtual Cockpit, which is a digital instrument cluster with excellent configurability.

Sport models get a number of cosmetic changes, including larger wheels and a part-leather interior. You also benefit from dual-zone climate control and selectable driving modes. S line examples get 18-inch alloy wheels alongside LED rear lights, privacy glass and sports seats.

Those wanting the most luxury need the top-spec Vorsprung, which gets features such as a Bang & Olufsen sound system, larger wheels and Matrix LED headlights.

Driver aids and safety features available include:

  • Cruise control
  • Parking sensors
  • Audi Pre-Sense Front (monitors the road ahead and warns against hazards)
  • Hill-hold assist
  • Lane departure warning

Is the Audi A3 right for me?

If you're looking for a premium hatchback or small saloon, then the Audi A3 is certainly worth considering. The efficient range of engines, stunning interior design and generous equipment levels mean you're getting good value for your money.

The premium hatchback segment has plenty of competition for you to look at. The aforementioned BMW 1 Series and Mercedes-Benz A-Class are popular for good reason. However, if you want better value then you won't go wrong with the Volkswagen Golf.
