The Kia Sportage has been around since 1993, but it's only really been a top contender in the UK's SUV stakes since the third generation came along in 2010.
The fourth generation took the Sportage to a whole new level in 2015, whilst this fifth generation properly excels the styling and reputation to even greater heights.
Of course, the SUV is quite possibly the hardest market to conquer, especially with favourites like the Nissan Qashqai, Ford Kuga, and Hyundai Tucson - but the Sportage is a top seller of its own.

Engines and Driving Experience
This fifth generation of the Kia Sportage is available with petrol, diesel, hybrid and plug-in hybrid availability.
If you want performance, the 261bhp PHEV version offers the best performance, with 0 to 62mph happening in 7.9 seconds, along with 43 miles of electric range.
The full hybrid isn't far off the PHEV, whilst the diesels are around four seconds slower to 62mph, which may feel sluggish to some.
Whatever setup you opt for, you'll still get a comfortable and refined driving experience, although perhaps don't expect a dynamic experience like that of a Cupra Forementor or similar sporty SUV. But some versions feel brisk enough in a straight line considering the size.
Practicality and Running Costs
The Sportage has never really lacked space and this fifth generation is no different.
There's plenty of space in the cabin and masses of boot space. Of course, this alters slightly with the electric bits and bobs taking up space in the hybrid and plug-in hybrid.
Mild hybrids have 591 litres of boot space, which reduces by 4 litres in the full hybrid and only drops to 540 litres in the plug-in hybrid.
As for running costs, for a family SUV the Sportage is excellent with around 45mpg to 50mpg depending on model, whilst the plug-in hybrid version returns around 80mpg.
Servicing is also reasonable, and can be taken care of at any Evans Halshaw Kia retailer.
Interior, Technology and Safety
Interiors give a solid and premium vibe, especially if you opt for a higher spec trim like the GT-Line models.
Digital dials and a nice infotainment screen ensure the modern feel, the screens are again enhanced and are larger in higher spec models, as you may expect, increasing from 8 inches to 12.3 inches.
All the modern tech is there too, with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and DAB all being present.
Safety tech is decent too with even lower trim models getting semi-autonomous driving assistance, whilst higher trim models get things like forward collision-avoidance assist, smart cruise control and lane follow assist.
Is the Kia Sportage right for me?
The fifth generation Kia Sportage came on the scene in 2022 and went straight into the top-selling car ranks in the UK.
Its sharp looks give it a more premium vibe than many of its competitors, especially in the GT-Line trims which are properly striking and worth going for if you want a more attractive SUV.
The Nissan Qashqai continues to be popular with smaller SUVs like the Ford Puma also tempting those looking for an SUV of some kind.
The Sportage is hard to ignore though, especially considering its impressive evolution.
