Used Kia Niro For Sale
The Kia Niro is an eco-friendly SUV that relies purely on hybrid and electric power, making it a great choice for families looking to reduce their carbon footprint.
Introduced in 2017, the Niro has been a strong performer for the South Korean brand, who are known for building quality SUVs such as the Sportage and Sorento. The closest rival to the Niro is arguably the Toyota Prius, which although is more established in the market, doesn't offer the same value.
Beside the excellent value on offer, here's what the Kia Niro offers in short:
- Peaceful driving experience
- All-electric drivetrain available
- Good practicality
- Generous spec across the range
Engines and Driving Experience
If you're a fan of a quiet driving experience, then you'll enjoy owning and driving the Niro, which does a great job of keeping road and wind noise at bay. In addition, the hybrid drivetrains are refined, while the all-electric Niro is near-silent on the move.
The Kia Niro is available as a self-charging hybrid (HEV) and a plug-in hybrid (PHEV). They both utilise a 1.6-litre petrol engine, and both of them produce 139bhp.
The big difference between the pair is that the plug-in hybrid model has a bigger battery, allowing it to drive up to 31 miles on electric power alone. Expect close to 60mpg from the HEV and up to 201mpg from the PHEV.
A spritely all-electric version is also available, aptly called the e-Niro. Fitted with a 64kWh battery, the e-Niro is by the far the quickest in the range, taking just 7.5 seconds to travel from 0 to 62mph. Better yet, it'll travel up to 282 miles before running out of juice.
Practicality and Running Costs
The Niro is a practical car regardless of which drivetrain you opt for. With 427 litres, the boot is more than big enough to accommodate anything family life can throw at it. It's worth nothing that the PHEV's batteries do eat into the boot space, reducing its capacity to 324 litres. At least the large tailgate and minimal loading lip make up for this.
Inside, there is plenty of space for passengers sitting in the front or rear. Every car gets 5-doors as standard, making it easy to fit a child's seat using the ISOFIX anchor points. Later Niro models can tow up to 1,300kg, a trait that's quite rare in hybrid vehicles.
Choose an example with a full history and you'll benefit from the remainder of Kia's extensive 7-year warranty. To keep on top of servicing and maintenance, contact your nearest Evans Halshaw Kia retailer.
Interior, Technology, and Safety
The Niro's central dash is largely dominated by a touchscreen. Not that this is an issue because it's responsive and beautifully well-integrated. Typical of Kia, the interior is full of quality materials, with any scratchier plastics placed well away from common touching points.
The choice of trims are nice and simple, with the Niro available in '2', 3' and '4' guises. Entry-level '2' models get dual-zone climate control, a 3.5-inch TFT screen in the instrument cluster, as well as Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility.
Take it up a notch to the '3' and you'll enjoy a larger 10.25-inch touchscreen, sat nav, heated front seats and leather upholstery. You even get 18-inch alloy wheels and front parking sensors.
Top-spec '4' cars are brimming with kit. They feature heated outer rear seats, ventilated front seats, keyless entry and go, and an electric sunroof. The Niro is a very safe car, and is available with the following driver aids and safety features:
- Autonomous emergency braking
- Adaptive cruise control
- Lane-departure warning
- Blind-spot monitoring
- Rear cross-traffic alert
Is the Kia Niro right for me?
There's no denying the credentials of the Niro. You get an eco-friendly car regardless of the drivetrain you opt for, and you also benefit from a raft of features and safety kit. In short, if you're after a green family SUV, then the Niro warrants consideration.
The world isn't short on efficient family cars. A class-leader for a reason, the Toyota Prius needs considering despite not being an SUV, although there's the Toyota CH-R if you're adamant that an SUV is what you want. The Renault Captur plug-in hybrid is very good, and offers a driving experience that's more fun. Check out the MINI Countryman if you want something more premium.
