The MINI Countryman is a medium-sized SUV that has been designed to offer added practicality over the brand's Hatchback and Convertible models.

When the original Countryman was released in 2010, there were enthusiasts that were not thrilled by the concept of a large MINI. However, they need not have worried, because it captured all the traits that make the regular Hatchbacks so brilliant, but with a larger boot and cabin.

The model you see here builds on the success of its predecessors, and makes a good used car purchase for the following reasons:

  • Fun to drive
  • Large boot
  • Well-equipped across the range
  • Efficient engine choices
  • Available as a plug-in hybrid (PHEV)

Engines and Driving Experience

Blue MINI Countryman, driving

Offering strong everyday performance and a balanced chassis, you are guaranteed to crack a smile behind the wheel of a Countryman. And because the cabin is well-insulated from road and wind noise, it is enjoyable to drive when commuting.

Petrol engines consist of a 1.5-litre and a 2.0-litre unit. The smaller engine produces 136bhp and will return up to 42.8mpg, while the larger engine has an output of 189bhp (in Cooper S models) and can achieve up to 40.9mpg.

If you want performance, then check out the John Cooper Works (JCW) model, which utilises all-wheel drive and 302bhp to achieve 0 to 62mph in 4.9 seconds.

A plug-in hybrid version exists, and pairs an electric motor with the regular 1.5-litre petrol engine to produce a combined 221bhp. Up to 156.9mpg is possible in this model, and you can drive up to 29 miles on battery power alone before needing to recharge.

A sole 2.0-litre diesel engine, which develops 148bhp, will suit you if you do quite a bit of mileage every year. Plus, it will return up to 56.5mpg, although this does drop to a max of 51.4mpg if you go for an all-wheel drive model.

Practicality and Running Costs

MINI Countryman, boot and rear seats

With 5-doors and a large boot, the Countryman is a great everyday family SUV.

The 450-litre boot will comfortably accommodate anything you need to transport, and can even grow to 1,390 litres with the rear seats folded down. A minimal lip makes it a doddle to load and unload cumbersome items.

The raised ride height is beneficial when accessing the rear of the car, while the wide-opening doors make it easy to guide a child's seat into the ISOFIX anchor points that come as standard.

Insurance premiums should be pretty affordable given that the majority of models do not exceed insurance group 25. Just be wary of the JCW model, which sits in group 36 (50 being the highest). Specialised servicing is available through all Stratstone MINI retailers.

Interior, Technology, and Safety

MINI Countryman, interior

Brimming with character and quality materials, the Countryman's interior is an enjoyable place to spend time.

Occupying the central dashboard is a large circular binnacle that houses the infotainment system. The screen is vibrant and the menus are easy to explore thanks to the touchscreen and a physical dial next to the electronic handbrake.

MINI offered the Countryman in three different specifications:

  • Classic
  • Sport
  • Exclusive

The Classic may be the entry-level model, but it gets Bluetooth, cruise control and rear parking sensors as standard. If you want something a bit more driver focussed, then the Sport gets a smart body kit, body-hugging seats and bigger wheels. Meanwhile, luxurious features such as leather seats are reserved for the Exclusive models.

Standard safety features and driver aids include:

  • Dynamic Stability Control (DSC)
  • Tyre pressure monitoring system
  • Intelligent emergency calling (MINI E-Call)
  • Anti-lock braking system (ABS)

Is the MINI Countryman right for me?

MINI have never been renowned for building practical vehicles, which can be a problem if you have a family that needs catering for. However, the Countryman offers the driving thrills associated with its smaller counterparts, but benefits from a large boot and spacious cabin, making it a great family car for keen drivers.

SUVs are popular in the UK, so it's worth looking at some of the alternatives before you commit. The Kia Sportage is a firm favourite for a good reason and is even more practical, although it is hard to ignore the Ford Kuga if you are after a good driving experience.
