Engines and Driving Experience
Some manufacturers are guilty of trying to get a mid-sized SUV to drive and handle like regular hatchbacks. And they usually achieve this at the expense of comfort. Kia haven't gone down this rabbit hole, because the Sportage prioritises comfort and refinement, making it a great everyday family car for commuting and school runs.
There are two petrol engines to choose from, both of which are derived from a 1.6-litre unit. The only difference is that one is turbocharged and the other isn't. The one that uses a turbo produces 174bhp and does 0 to 62mph in 8.9 seconds. With 130bhp, the non-turbo is naturally slower, but it returns up to 36.2mpg compared to the bigger engine's 34.9mpg (32.5mpg in the four-wheel drive model).
Earlier diesel models recruited a 1.7-litre engine. It wasn't quick by any means, only producing 114bhp, but it was smooth and could do over 55mpg. Later models use a 1.6-litre engine that benefits from mild hybrid (MHEV) technology, helping to reduce emissions and improve fuel economy, with up up 47.9mpg possible.
It's worth noting that four-wheel drive is available on the Sportage, making it ideal for families that live in the country.
Practicality and Running Costs
Typical of most SUVs this size, the Sportage has plenty of space inside, which will suit young families and those who carry adults in the back on a regular basis. 5-doors come as standard, providing convenient access to the rear, where you'll find ISOFIX anchor points for a child's seat.
With 491 litres of boot space on offer (431 litres in the hybrid), the Sportage can easily carry a pushchair alongside the weekly food shop. In addition, there is 1,480 litres of space once the rear seats are folded down. The ability to store the parcel shelf under the boot floor is a welcome one, too.
The Sportage is surprisingly good at towing, and can haul up to 1,900kg with the most potent petrol engine installed.
Despite its size and the amount of kit you get, the Sportage only occupies insurance groups between 12 and 25, meaning it should be reasonable to insure. As with any Kia, servicing and maintenance shouldn't cost too much, and can be completed through your nearest Evans Halshaw Kia retailer.
Interior, Technology and Safety
Although the visual design of the cabin is nothing special, the quality of the materials used by Kia are top notch. Everything is robust without feeling cheap, and newer models all get a touchscreen in the central dashboard for a premium finish.
There have been plenty of Sportage models to choose from over the years, but Kia dropped the entry-level '1' and top-spec '4' options in 2020. If you do come across an older '1' model within budget, then expect 16-inch alloy wheels, air-conditioning and electric windows all-round.
The now entry-level '2' cars get the same as the outgoing '1', but they add Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility alongside a reversing camera and 17-inch alloy wheels. Step up to the '3' and you'll get 19-inch wheels, a panoramic sunroof and a 4.2-inch digital instrument cluster.
The GT Line is more about sporty touches such as larger wheels, dual exhausts and a flat-bottomed steering wheel. The GT Line S builds on this with ventilated front seats, wireless phone charging and a powered tailgate.
