Engines and Driving Experience

Ford Kuga

There's multiple petrol, hybrid and plug-in hybrid choices when looking at a Ford Kuga.

A petrol 1.5-litre 4-cylinder (also found in the Ford Focus) gives the Kuga 148bhp, good for 0 to 62mph in under 10 seconds. Not performance car territory but pretty much the ballpark area for a family SUV.

Then there's a several diesel units with 118bhp, 148bhp and 187bhp. The latter is the only Kuga available with all-wheel drive, with the rest being front-wheel drive.

Again, performance takes around 12 seconds for the lesser powered diesel, dropping to just under 10 seconds for the 148bhp version, whilst the all-wheel drive 187bhp version is the only one which dips under 9 seconds.

To drive, the Kuga is respectable for a family SUV. It handles well too, considering its size.

Practicality and Running Costs

Ford Kuga

Interestingly, the boot size does fall short of the old Kuga though, as this generation features 412 litres, whereas the first generation offered a little more at 456 litres.

This increases however to 1,534 litres by folding the rear seats, which again falls short of its predecessor which features 1,653 litres of space.

Despite this, there's plenty of space for five average adults in the Kuga, with stacks of legroom too. Attention has been paid to making sure there's lots of cubbie storage too, ideal for all the family's bits and bobs.

And as for running costs, you don't want to be visiting the pumps too much with a family car.

With between 40mpg and 51mpg available across the diesel and petrol range, it makes the Kuga relatively easy on the bank balance.

If you want to increase the savings more, the plug-in hybrids offer up to 280mpg. As ever, take that figure with a pinch of salt, but you'll be saving more fuel wise, even if you may have to shell out a little more for a PHEV model initially.

Interior, Technology and Safety

Ford Kuga

As expected with a later model, and one to come out around 2020, the Kuga's interior is a lot fresher. It does feel similar to the Focus of the same era.

Depending on trim, you can find models with fully digital instrument clusters, although the analogue dials in some models still look crisp and both go well with the new central infotainment screen, which again lifts the interior cabin vibe well.

As for safety, the Kuga performed well receiving a 5-star score in Euro NCAP tests upon launch. This is thanks to standard safety kit which includes:

  • Autonomous emergency braking
  • Cruise control
  • Lane-keeping assist
  • Multiple airbags

Is the Ford Kuga right for me?

Ford has a habit of keeping customers thanks to cars like the Fiesta and Focus which showcase value, dependability and quality. Owners then upgrade to bigger models if needed and with the Kuga effectively being a bigger Focus in essence, it's ideal for those who want a familiar SUV for their family life.

However, with cars like the Kia Sportage, Peugeot 3008 and Nissan Qashqai offering stylish alternatives with perhaps more interesting features and style, you'd have to love Ford a lot to not be tempted away.
