Engines and Driving Experience
Both a selection of petrol and diesel engine choices are available for the Ford Kuga, with varying power outputs. The standouts are the 1.5-litre 147bhp EcoBoost petrol engine, which can return around 45mpg, along with a 2.0-litre 147bhp diesel, which can return 60mpg.
The driving experience itself is typical of a Ford SUV in the fact it is excellent, and shares similarities with a car. This is a trait that is welcomed in a tall-bodied SUV.
All-wheel drive and two-wheel drive is also available, so you can tailor your Kuga to your exact needs, and to what you will be using the SUV for. The increased ground clearance is also welcome given the condition of Britain's B roads.
Practicality and Running Costs
Offering plenty of space, there’s enough room to seat five in complete comfort in the Kuga, with generous head and legroom both upfront and in the rear.
A decent 456 litres of boot space with all the seats in place is also on offer too. However, if you fold the rear seats flat then the boot space increases to a rather large 1,653 litres.
You may think a sizeable SUV would be expensive to run, but in this particular case, the Kuga is not at all expensive. Interior, Technology and Safety
A spacious interior welcomes occupants. Facelifted cars from 2016 feature a much more attractive central infotainment screen, and colour screen within the instrument cluster. Range-topping Vignale models get luxurious cream leather seats for that little bit of extra wow factor.
Kuga models prior to 2016 do feel very outdated in comparison, with no large infotainment screen, and unimpressive analogue dials and screens. Updated 2016 car onwards are the best models to go for and come with a decent standard specification on the entry-level Zetec models. This includes Ford DAB radio with 6 speakers, Ford SYNC with a 4.2-inch TFT screen, voice control, USB connectivity, Emergency Assistance and Cruise control.
Later 2016 facelifted models also come with a full five-star EURO NCAP safety rating and boast a number of driver aids that have been designed to reduce your chance of getting involved in a collision.
Is the Ford Kuga right for me?
If you are in the market for a well-rounded SUV, that is good to drive and won't break the bank, a Ford Kuga is a great choice when considering a used SUV.
Competitors include the Kia Sportage, which offers superb value and lots of standard specification. Elsewhere the Volkswagen Tiguan offers a higher quality feel.
Both these SUVs are good alternatives, but the VW will cost more and the Kia badge doesn't have as much credibility as the Ford. All three are good examples of a quality used SUV and a test drive should make the selection process easier.
