The Ford Edge was actually designed for North America, but just like its V8 sibling - the Ford Mustang, which was well received over here in the UK, you can't blame Ford for trying this American SUV too; it's not like SUVs aren't popular in UK. So that's exactly what Ford did.

Engines and Driving Experience

There are four different diesel powered engines available in the Ford edge. These comprise of two TDCi engines - a 177bhp manual and a more potent 207bhp automatic, both capable of returning around 47mpg.

The other engines to note are a 147bhp EcoBlue manual, along with a range-topping 234bhp EcoBlue automatic, with both returning around 41mpg.

Interestingly the higher-powered TDCi and EcoBlue engines can return similar mpg to their lower powered alternatives as they use automatic transmissions, which as a whole tend to deliver better economy.

In typical Ford style, this large SUV actually drives very well, as is the case with many Ford SUV and MPV models. The driving experience is rather car-like, a trait Ford manage with many of their SUV/MPV models.

Practicality and Running Costs

Five doors, five seats and North American DNA ensure you don't want for more space in the Ford Edge. There is also a massive 602 litres of boot space, which increases even further to 1,847 litres with the rear seats folded.

Despite its size, it's no bigger than a normal saloon, so you shouldn't have trouble maneuvering it around town or in tight and tricky car parks.

With over 40mpg possible, this somewhat beastly SUV is surprisingly frugal. Elsewhere, this is still a Ford so servicing is quite reasonable, but things like tyres may prove costly from premium brands, due to the 4x4 nature and size.

Interior, Technology and Safety

You are certainly not short of space in the Edge, which can seat five occupants comfortably with plenty of space. The fit and finish is decent too, especially in the high-spec Vignale models. Dials are analogue, yet use digital screens within for a sort of 50/50 compromise, which works well giving a nod to both past and future normality.

Technology is also impressive, thanks to Active Noise Control systems and acoustic double-glazed windows to ensure cabin noise is almost none-existent. Voice recognition is also standard, along with a rear view camera, traffic sign recognition and lane keeping assist.

The Ford Edge also achieved a reassuring five-star EURO NCAP safety rating, the highest rating available.

Is the Ford Edge right for me?

If you are after a striking looking SUV with real road presence, then the Ford Edge makes for a great used buy.

With a decent level of standard specification, complemented by a fine driving experience it was a good move from Ford to try the Edge in the UK in the first place.

Competitors like the Kia Sorento and Hyundai Santa Fe may well have nicer infotainment, and more toys, but the Ford seems to be the most premium looking and feeling. Plus the Ford familiarity is also a bonus.
