Innovative Technology

The Ford Mustang Mach-E represents the next chapter for the illustrious pony club, and encompasses the best of the Ford Mustang within an all-electric SUV. What's more, the Mach-E is brimming with state-of-the-art technologies and innovative features, making it the most advanced member of the Mustang family yet.

With that said, we wanted to explore the Mach-E's interior in more detail and have an in-depth look at the features that are available and how they'll enhance the driving experience of those who buy one.

Infotainment System (Ford SYNC 4)

As with any new car bearing the Mustang moniker, there's always a number of talking points, and the Mach-E is no exception. Arguably the most discussed feature within the Mach-E is the huge 15.5-inch portrait touchscreen that dominates the centre console.

Within the vibrant and crisp display is Ford's next generation of SYNC, which is the brand's in-car communication and entertainment system. Typical of SYNC, the menus are easy to navigate and the system reacts rapidly to inputs, with no lag at all. Working in tandem with cloud-based connectivity and intelligent voice control, SYNC can learn your preferences and will automatically adapt what it displays.

Across the bottom of the screen, you're able to adjust everyday settings such as the dual-zone climate control and heated seats. At the top of the screen you can choose between menus that give you access to the entertainment system or the vehicle's settings.

Cloud-based Connectivity

The vehicle's settings will naturally get less use than the entertainment section, but it does allow you to play with features such as the drive modes, camera and settings for the driver aids.

It also gives you the option to search through the extensive digital owner's manual, which provides in-depth information on the Mach-E's features alongside helpful how-to videos.

In-car apps such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard practice these days, but it's the cloud-based connectivity that really impresses. The most notable in-car feature that benefits from this is the satellite navigation, which uses data from the cloud to give you real-time traffic information and advanced route planning.

In addition to the above, it'll tell you where the nearest public charging points are and even provide you with the latest weather updates.

Driving Modes

True to the Mustang name, the Mach-E offers an engaging experience that should keep the keenest of drivers satisfied. The Mach-E handles well for an SUV and produces a huge amount of grip, which is only enhanced in models with all-wheel drive.

Being all-electric, the power and torque produced by the batteries is instant, making for effortless acceleration. The great thing about the Mustang Mach-E is that the experience can be tailored to you courtesy of three driving modes: Active, Whisper and Untamed.

The Active setting offers a good balance of comfort and fun, making it a great choice for everyday commuting. Whisper has been designed to offer a more refined journey, which should prove welcome when travelling over distances. Finally, there's Untamed, a setting that sharpens up power delivery and really increases the fun factor.

In addition to the settings above, there is a cool feature called 'Propulsion Sound'. If you choose to enable it, the car will make a futuristic surging noise as you accelerate.

Driver Aids and Safety Features

Not only is the Ford Mustang Mach-E a fun SUV to drive, it also comes with a plethora of useful driver aids and safety features. One of our favourite pieces of tech is the One Pedal Drive system, which allows you to gently slow the car down when you remove your foot from the throttle pedal.

On top of that, the car regenerates power as it slows down, thus improving efficiency. You should only need to use the brake pedals if you need to stop suddenly, leaving you to waft along effortlessly in the meantime.

Elsewhere, the Adaptive Cruise Control is a welcome feature on motorways, and allows you to maintain a pre-set distance to the car in front. The Mustang Mach-E is also equipped with something called Active Park Assist, which can identify a suitable space and seamlessly guide you in and out.

Thankfully, we didn't need to rely on the Evasive Steering safety feature when we were out and about, but it's reassuring to know that the car will provide additional steering support should you need to swerve around an object.

FordPass App

Although a vast amount of vehicle information is available through the central SYNC 4 infotainment system, the ability to access it through the FordPass App is bound to come in handy on a daily basis.

Alongside the vehicle information and driving data is the 'Intelligent Range' feature, which has been designed specifically for the Mustang Mach-E and displays useful details such as:

  • Remaining driving distance
  • Percentage of charge remaining
  • Public charging locations that are on route

In addition to the above, the app allows you to do the following:

  • Get instant vehicle health alerts
  • Monitor tyre pressures
  • Locate the car
  • Remotely lock or unlock the car

There's a host of other useful features accessible through the FordPass app, but these were the aspects that impressed us the most during our time with the car.

Panorama Roof

Making the Mustang Mach-E an SUV (sports utility vehicle) may have seemed a touch controversial among fans of the coupé bodystyle that's found on the traditional Mustang, but it isn't without its benefits.

The sheer amount of space you're greeted with upon entering the car feels genuinely uplifting, this is partly in thanks to the minimalistic layout that Ford have opted for.

However, the most noticeable feature that really maximises the commodious cabin design is the inclusion of a panoramic sunroof, which is included as part of the Technology Pack+ that's available with extended range models.

Although there's nothing revolutionary about this, there are few cars that boast a fixed glass roof that is this big. It allows vast amounts of natural light to filter in, ultimately making the cabin feel bright and airy throughout. In addition, the glass wears a special coating that helps the interior stay warm during the winter and cool throughout the summer.

As you can see, the Mustang Mach-E is absolutely brimming with useful technologies and innovative features that have all been designed to enhance the driving experience on a daily basis.

Combined with the engaging driving experience and the benefits of going all-electric, it's reasonable to say the Mach-E represents another fine entry into the pony club's ongoing heritage.
