Used Kia Picanto For Sale

The Kia Picanto is a well-built city car that offers a great blend of affordability and quality.

City cars are usually designed to fulfil a simple remit: affordable to buy and brimming with character. The Picanto excels in both of these key areas by offering a similar build quality to the Toyota Aygo and better value for money than the popular Volkswagen up!.

That great value has carried over to the used car market, but why consider a used Picanto?

  • Affordable to buy and run
  • Decent interior design
  • Younger models still benefit from Kia's class-leading warranty
  • Efficient range of engines
  • Easy to drive

Engines and Driving Experience

Yellow Kia Picanto, driving

Although city cars don't have the same power as their larger counterparts, they do benefit from being light. As a result, the Picanto feels eager when driving around town and is easy to manoeuvre in confined spaces. The Picanto doesn't falter when venturing outside of the city either, although there's a bit of wind and engine noise on motorways.

The entry-level 1.0-litre petrol engine with 66bhp is best-suited to urban use, and will return up to 50.4mpg. If you encounter hills on a regular basis, then we'd recommend the larger 1.25-litre unit. The 18bhp hike to 84bhp may not sound much, but it does help. Plus, this engine can achieve up to 49.6mpg.

A turbocharged 1.0-litre petrol sits at the top of the range. The 99bhp figure is unlikely to impress your friends, but it does get the lightweight Picanto shifting down the road quite swiftly, with 0 to 62mph taking just 9.8 seconds. It'll return up to 48.7mpg for good measure.

Practicality and Running Costs

Yellow Kia Picanto, boot

Breaking the mould with a versatile interior and a decent amount of head room, the Picanto is more practical than you'd initially think. The vast majority of used cars will have 5-doors, making it possible to give your friends a lift without them having to clamber over a folded front seat.

At 255 litres, the boot may not sound overly commodious. However, when you consider that close rivals, such as the Citroën C1, have a 196-litre boot, you start to realise the Picanto punches above its weight. Naturally, the rear seats can fold forward to create a 1,010-litre space.

Opt for a younger model and you'll benefit from Kia's 7-year warranty, which certainly provides peace of mind when buying. Being a small car, servicing and maintenance costs are affordable, while annual premiums shouldn't be too offensive because the Picanto doesn't exceed insurance group 10.

Interior, Technology and Safety

Compared to the likes of the Volkswagen up!, the Picanto's general interior quality and design fare very well. Visually, the cabin's appearance feels more on-par with cars in the next price bracket, which is high praise indeed.

Entry-level '1' models will feel pretty basic inside compared to more expensive cars. You do get front electric windows and a USB port, but it's worth stepping up to higher-grade cars unless you aren't too fussed about tech. Picanto '2' cars get Bluetooth connectivity, a height-adjustable driver's seat and air-conditioning.

Move up from there and luxuries such as a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system are included; this set up comes with sat-nav as well as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. GT-Line cars are the athletic siblings, and get larger wheels alongside sportier accents and stiffened suspension.

The Picanto is available with the following safety features and driver aids:

  • Six airbags
  • Cruise control
  • Rear parking sensors
  • Autonomous emergency braking
  • Electronic stability control (ESC)

Is the Kia Picanto right for me?

There's plenty of city cars to choose from on the market, but the Kia Picanto has to be up there with the best of them thanks to its stylish appearance and efficient range of engines. Throw in a large (for this class of car) boot alongside affordable running costs and the Picanto really makes sense if you're looking for this kind of car.

The Volkswagen up! is a natural contender and has been a class-leader for some time now, although the SEAT Mii is a cheaper alternative that's built on the same platform and is even available with all-electric power. A Toyota Aygo is always worth a look too, featuring a bolder interior design alongside Toyota's impressive reliability record.
