Used Toyota AYGO Front

The Toyota Aygo is a tiny city car that has been on sale in the UK in its latest guise since 2014, albeit with a facelift in 2018.

It has served as the entry point into the Toyota range of cars since 2005, sitting below the Yaris and Corolla as the smallest car they make. Reasons to buy a used Toyota Aygo include:

  • Cheap to buy
  • Low running costs
  • 5-door layout
  • Quirky styling and fun to drive
  • Choice of manual and semi-automatic versions

Engines and Driving Experience

Used Toyota AYGO Exterior, Rear

This generation of Aygo has only ever been available with a 1.0-litre 3-cylinder petrol engine, which produces 70bhp. Most of the used AYGOs you'll see are manual, but you can find the odd semi-automatic 'x-shift' model if you look hard enough.

Performance is nippy in first and second gear, but with a 13.8 second 0 to 62mph time it isn't going to win any drag races.

In truth, the Aygo is most at home in and around urban areas where speeds are low. It's mightily adept and manoeuvring in tight spaces and parking is an absolute breeze, especially with the standard-fit rear-view camera.

A top speed of 99mph means it can handle motorway speeds better than you might think, although it won't be as refined as a Volkswagen Up! or SEAT Mii.

Practicality and Running Costs

Used Toyota AYGO Boot Space

Despite its size, the Aygo is actually reasonably practical, particularly 5-door versions which are miles more popular than the rare 3-door examples you might come across.

Space for front occupants is to the point where you don't really notice you're in a small car, but climb in the rear seats and it becomes obvious. It's fine for kids but adults won't want to sit back there for very long. ISOFIX child seat anchor points are present.

As you might expect, the boot isn't huge at 168 litres in capacity, a lot less than the Hyundai i10 (252 litres) and Kia Picanto (255 litres).

Running costs are as cheap as they come for a petrol car, with expected fuel economy of around 56mpg, very low insurance groups and low-cost servicing which can be carried out at any Evans Halshaw dealership.

Interior, Technology and Safety

Used Toyota AYGO Interior

Everything that you need to touch on a regular basis inside the Aygo feels nice and tactile, from the leather-wrapped steering wheel to the chrome-trimmed gear knob and door handles. There are some cheaper plastics on the dashboard and doors, but this is offset by the gloss black trim adorning the centre console and gauge cluster.

Technology is actually pretty good. There's a central touchscreen which houses DAB radio and it even has smartphone mirroring capability, so you can load up Spotify, Google Maps and other useful driving apps. All models apart from the entry-level 'X' spec have automatic air con, tinted rear windows and automatic headlights, too.

The Aygo is rated 3 out of 5 stars for safety by Euro NCAP, which is typical in this class of car. It holds up well in an accident, but the lack of advanced driver aids means a lower score is inevitable. Standard safety features include:

  • Four airbags
  • Anti-lock brakes
  • Electronic stability control
  • Hill start assist

Is the Toyota Aygo right for me?

The Aygo is the right car for people who want something small, cheap and economical (we're looking at you, young drivers). It delivers strongly on all of these fronts and, with its quirky design and the availability of lots of different colours, injects some personality and fun into the mix, too.

British used car buyers love a city car and there's no shortage of choice out there on the market. The Citroën C1 and Peugeot 108 look different but are mechanically identical to the AYGO, while the Volkswagen up!, Skoda Citigo, Hyundai i10 and Kia Picanto are all excellent small cars.
