The Toyota Yaris is a supermini hatchback that offers excellent practicality, comfort and fuel economy. This is especially true of the Yaris Hybrid, which outclasses the competition when it comes to running costs.
It sits in the used Toyota range between the smaller AYGO city car and the larger Auris and Corolla hatchbacks, and is ideal for those who need something practical but also want to keep purchase and ownership costs down.
This version of the Yaris was sold between 2011 and 2020 in the UK, going through two facelifts in that time, most notably in 2017. It's worth considering for a number of reasons:

Engines and Driving Experience
Petrol manual Yaris models are the most popular, with the Yaris Hybrid following closely behind thanks to its tremendous efficiency and ease of drive. Diesels are very rare as they weren't popular from new.
The most popular engine choices on the used market are:
- 1.0-litre petrol: cheap to insure but also the slowest, achieves around 60mpg
- 1.33-litre petrol: provides an optimum balance between performance and efficiency with fuel economy in the 50-55mpg range
- 1.5-litre petrol (2017 onwards): generates more power and torque than the older 1.33 but gets around the same fuel economy
- 1.5-litre petrol/electric hybrid: comes equipped with an automatic transmission as standard and is capable of 60+mpg
Out on the road the Yaris is a very capable town car, but it's also adept at the occasional trip down the motorway. It's no Ford Fiesta in the handling stakes, but is comfortable and quiet nonetheless. For many years the Yaris was the only full hybrid supermini you could buy, until the Renault Clio E-TECH came along.
Practicality and Running Costs
The Yaris' external shape means that internal room is very good for a car in this class, and it's very spacious inside compared to the likes of the Vauxhall Corsa and Mazda 2.
The theme of roominess continues into the rear, where the flat floor makes squeezing three people into the back less of a chore. Boot space is good too at 286 litres, however, it's lower than the latest generation VW Polo and Ford Fiesta, both of which have grown in recent years.
Running costs are inexpensive with low road tax and insurance, great value servicing through Evans Halshaw and marvellous fuel economy, particularly on hybrid versions which can exceed 60mpg.
Interior, Technology, and Safety
The interior style of the Yaris may not win any awards for eye-catching design, but it's very functional with the most important controls well laid out.
Toyota were the first brand to introduce the now industry-standard touchscreen into a supermini with the Yaris. It houses vehicle settings, media, Bluetooth phone connectivity, sat nav (on higher grades) and a handy reversing camera that makes parking a lot easier.
A five-star safety rating was awarded to the Yaris in both 2011 and 2017, and provides exceptional protection to occupants in the event of an accident. From 2017 onwards, all Yaris models featured Toyota Safety Sense as standard, which includes:
- Pre-collision system
- Lane departure alert
- Automatic high beam
