Engines and Driving Experience

The Mazda2 is a fun car to drive thanks to its direct steering and ability to resist excessive roll whilst cornering. However, the suspension isn't overly stiff, making the 2 a comfortable car for everyday use.

Petrol models will be the most common sight during your search. Mazda did offer the 2 with a diesel, although they are incredibly rare because of how efficient the petrol engines are.

Practicality and Running Costs

Inside, the 2 is relatively spacious thanks to its high roofline. We wouldn't recommend one if you need to travel with five grown adults on a regular basis, but it'll be more than ample if you have a young family because it has five doors.

With the rear seats left in place there is 255 litres of boot space. Although it's big enough for weekly shopping, it doesn't compete with the likes of the SEAT Ibiza (355 litres). The rear seats can be folded down using two buttons, which increases boot capacity to 887 litres.

The Mazda2 occupies insurance groups between 13 and 22 (out of 50), which should prove beneficial come renewal time. Consumables such as brakes and tyres are relatively inexpensive, while affordable servicing is available through all Evans Halshaw retailers.

Interior, Technology and Safety

Compared to more modern rivals, the Mazda2's interior is starting to show its age. However, the cabin is well made and comes with a host of features that make daily driving more enjoyable.

Later versions of the 2 come with a 7.0-inch infotainment screen as standard (base models used to have a radio display). It isn't as responsive as the system you get in a Skoda Fabia, but the menu's simplistic layout is easy to navigate.

As standard, you get LED headlights, Bluetooth connectivity, cruise control and air conditioning. Plusher models benefit from keyless entry, heated leather seats and a 360-degree camera, so it's worth keeping an eye out for them.

The Mazda2 scored four stars during its Euro NCAP safety test, scoring highly for occupant protection. It achieved this score because of features such as:

Tyre pressure monitoring system
ISOFIX anchor points

If you're in the market for a handsome supermini that's fun to drive and affordable to run, then the Mazda2 makes a compelling all-rounder. The only thing you'll have to take into account is the smaller than average boot and lack of engine choice compared to rivals.
