This generation of Polo has been available with a variety of engines throughout its lifetime, which are mostly petrol-powered. A diesel was in production for a while, but has been discontinued in recent years. We've highlighted the most popular engines below:

Practicality and Running Costs

With a spacious cabin and wide-opening rear doors, the Polo is easy to recommend if you have a young family. ISOFIX anchor points are present in the back seats, making it straightforward to fit a child's seat.

Offering 351 litres of boot space, the Polo is among the leaders in this segment, and is even on par with some cars in the class above. For reference, the Volkswagen Golf, which is the Polo's bigger brother, has a 380-litre boot.

The majority of Polo models don't exceed insurance group 10 (50 being the highest), so your annual premiums shouldn't be too hefty. Interior, Technology and Safety

The quality of the Polo's interior is pretty high, which helps distinguish it from rivals in the same segment. A central touchscreen features as standard across the range, and offers intuitive navigation of the media system and vehicle settings.

Later versions of the Polo come with a generous list of equipment as standard. Air conditioning, all-round electric windows, Bluetooth and parking sensors are just some of the features you can expect when buying a Polo.

If you want something sportier, but don't want a GTI, then an R-Line comes with various enhancements without the increased running costs.

The Polo achieved a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating, scoring 96 percent for adult occupant protection and 85 percent for child protection. Standard safety features include:

The supermini segment is very congested, so it's worth checking out some of the competition before committing. The Ford Fiesta and Vauxhall Corsa are exceptional superminis that will cost less to buy and run. We'd also recommend the Hyundai i20 if you want something a bit more left-field.
