Jaguar I-TYPE 2 Formula E Racing Car Breaks Shelsley Walsh Record

The course record for a fully electric vehicle was smashed on Sunday 12th of August by Mitch Evans driving the Jaguar I-TYPE 2 Formula E racing car.

Powering up the hill in a time of just 30.46s was particularly impressive considering the morning rain had left the surface of the hill greasy and damp. The previous record was set by an electric Ford Focus, so it’s perhaps no surprise that the EV record was broken by a purpose-built racer. A dry track would have resulted in a much lower time.

This was the first time a Formula E car had ever competed at Shelsley Walsh, which was celebrating its 113th birthday and remains the oldest continuously-used motorsport venue in the world.

After his run, Panasonic Jaguar Racing driver Mitch Evans said: “It was a great honour to drive the Jaguar I-TYPE 2 at such a historic venue, and the whole team was elated with the record time we managed to achieve. Formula E fans in the UK were incredibly welcoming, and it was great to see them so excited about the car’s debut run here. I’m proud to have moved the class-best result a step further towards a potential pure electric outright hill record in the future.”

Famous Ford Rally Car set for Classic Nostalgia

The Mk II Ford Escort is a car that is synonymous with rallying. Between 1975 and 1981, the Ford Escort achieved 20 World Rally Championship round victories and took the overall WRC drivers' title in 1979 in the hands of Björn Waldegård. Hannu Mikkola finished in 2nd place and Ari Vatanen came in 5th position, both of whom were also driving Mk II Escort RS1800s.

This particular car - VHK 74S – is an ex-works team rally car built at the Boreham factory, competing in its first event way back in 1977. It has been restored to its original Group 4 works specification, with its 2.0L BDG engine producing around 256 bhp, coupled to a 5-speed ZF gearbox.

This is a significant car in Ford's rallying history and will make a welcome addition to the selection of classic '80s and '90s rally cars that will be racing up the hill at Classic Nostalgia, held at Shelsley Walsh between 28-29 July 2018.
