Engines and Driving Experience

Keeping it simple, there are a total of three engine choices available with the Ford KA+. These come in the form of two petrol engines; a 69bhp 1.2-litre and a slightly more powerful 83bhp version. These engines can return between 47 and 56mpg.

A 1.5-litre 93bhp diesel engine is also available. This is unsurprisingly the most economical with up to 60mpg possible and offers slightly better acceleration.

Due to its compact proportions, the KA+ is a great city car and holds the road well. It also soaks up bumps and is surprisingly comfortable. Out of the city it doesn't feel out of place on a motorway either, with minimal road and wind noise.

Practicality and Running Costs

With five-doors as standard, the KA+ serves up decent practicality for a small car. There are also five seats, although the middle rear seat is perhaps only suited to children. You won't have much trouble fitting four six-foot occupants though, which is great news for such a compact car.

Boot space is rather good too, with 270 litres available. To put this into perspective, that is only 20 litres less than a Fiesta. You can also lower the rear seats to increase the load area to a useful 849 litres too.

Some parts for the KA+ are shared with the Fiesta - the UK's best-selling car, so parts are usually inexpensive. Servicing is also low, along with insurance. Due to the small wheels, tyres are also inexpensive.

Interior, Technology and Safety

Interior wow factor isn't high in the KA+ if we're honest. It's pretty straight-forward and made up of plain, dark material which does however feel sturdy and solid.

Basic KA+ models do get Bluetooth, an alarm and hill start assist, which is relatively rare in an entry-level compact car like this. The instrument cluster is analogue and very basic, but there is some charm in its simplistic approach.

Six airbags are fitted as standard to the KA+, and achieved three out of five starts in the EURO NCAP safety ratings - mainly due to the car first being introduced back in 2016.

Is the Ford KA+ right for me?

If you're after a compact city car, that is good to drive, economical and one that shares DNA with the UK's best-selling car, the Fiesta, the KA+ could be a bit of bargain when buying used.

Although not scoring top marks in some areas, perhaps most notably safety, but as this is no longer a current car, safety features in newer cars have of course evolved and become more impressive.

The Peugeot 108, Citroën C1 and Toyota Aygo will be worth looking at if you are looking at competitors, but it is worth noting if you can spend a little more, it is always a good idea to look at the popular Fiesta too.
