Engines and Driving Experience

Everyday family cars are not really known for their involving driving experiences, as they aren't really designed to stir the senses. The Focus is a tad different though, and this particular version yet again delivers a lot of feedback from its agile and involving chassis.

This is normally only reserved for a model's sports or range-topping variants, but it comes as standard with the Focus, and yet still remains supple and comfortable on the nation's questionable road surfaces. Of course, the ST version offers even more thrills for petrolheads looking for the most from their Focus.

Award-winning EcoBoost petrol engines offer excellent everyday performance in the range, whilst still being able to deliver between 40 and 50mpg. There are also mild hybrid versions, which offer even better economy between 50 and 60mpg. The most economical however are the diesel engines, which can return over 60mpg in some specifications.

Practicality and Running Costs

The Focus has engineered itself the reputation of offering decent practicality throughout its evolution. This particular generation offers five-doors as standard, along with a boot able to swallow up most family items with 375 litres available - increasing to 1354 litres when the seats are folded flat. The Estate version offers a massive 609 litres, increasing to 1,650 litres with the seats folded.

Thanks to the award-winning EcoBoost engines, the Focus doesn't spend most of its life at the fuel pumps wither, thanks to great fuel economy across the range as mentioned previously.

Entry-level and mid-range models are also very inexpensive to insure thanks to their low insurance groups. The ST model will of course require higher premiums due to its increased performance. Servicing is also very reasonable and can be completed at many of our official Evans Halshaw Ford dealerships.

Interior, Technology and Safety

Ford have spent a lot of time perfecting their interiors of late, and this generation of Focus shows the hard work has certainly paid off. A more upmarket and ergonomic interior awaits driver and passengers, with clear dials, 6.0-inch or 8.5-inch infotainment screen and quality switchgear.

Technology is good in the Focus as standard, with a digital screen in-between the conventional analogue dials for a more focused display. Ford's SYNC 3 allows drivers good connectivity, along with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay coming standard too.

Safety scores top marks for the Focus, thanks to a five-star EURO NCAP crash rating. This is complemented by a Driver Assistance Pack, which offers features such as adaptive cruise control, traffic sign recognition and even inflatable seat belts.

Is the Ford Focus right for me?

You simply cannot go wrong with a Ford Focus Hatchback. Thanks to a great driving experience, decent practicality and a great choice of engines, it's no wonder they sell well.

And if you want a little more practicality, an Estate or Active model allow for you to still enjoy the Focus, just in a more practical package.

The BMW 1 Series and Mercedes-Benz A-Class offer full digital cockpits and a more premium overall experience, although the Focus does have better standard kit. A Vauxhall Astra is the car's direct competitor but it cannot match the Focus' overall experience. Alternatively, if you're on a tighter budget, then why not consider the previous generation Ford Focus that was produced between 2011 and 2018?
