Engines and Driving Experience
Award-winning engines take pride of place in the Focus range, from the ultra-impressive 1.0-litre EcoBoost to the spicy 2.3-litre full-bore Focus RS. These are joined by everything in between, including petrol, diesel and a super-rare electric version.
You can expect over 80mpg in some diesel versions, whilst most petrol versions can achieve over 45mpg. Even the RS can achieve over 35mpg on a run.
The driving experience itself is excellent, no matter which version you go for. Comfortable, damped well and a crisp manual gearbox ensure the Focus is delight to spend time behind the wheel in. As an everyday car, it can do city, rural or motorway miles with absolute ease.
Practicality and Running Costs
A hatchback body style is the Focus' main guise, although an Estate is also available. Five-doors comes as standard with this generation of Focus, with plenty of space amongst the cabin.
A decent 316 litres of boot space is available, which increases to 1,215 litres with the rear seats folded flat. There are also four ISOFIX points in the rear for ease when securing younger occupants.
Running costs for the Focus are excellent, with great economy as discussed previously along with reasonable maintenance and servicing costs, which incidentally can be taken care of at our dealerships. The performance ST and RS versions will demand a certain degree of increased cost, but as with most performance cars, this is to be expected.
Interior, Technology, and Safety
Interior quality is good in the Focus, with a central infotainment screen that works well, even if it is a tad more confusing to operate than other competitors. Analogue dials are clear and are complemented by a little colour screen displaying further info.
A clever blindspot function, self parking ability and emergency braking all feature within the Focus range. Like many cars, higher-spec models come with more toys and improved driver aids.
Safety is everything with a family car, and the Focus scores top marks in the EURO NCAP crash tests, achieving a full five-star rating. As standard you get a whole host of airbags and traction control for extra stability too.
Is the Ford Focus right for me?
You can't go far wrong with a Ford Focus. As stated right at the start of this piece, it's a textbook car that does everything so well.
Of course, a Volkswagen Golf is an even better all-rounder, but also carries a higher premium. A BMW 1 Series will appeal to those wanting a more premium hatchback experience, whereas an Audi A3 will do the same, but these will cost more than the Golf, and substantially more than the Focus.
The Vauxhall Astra is the direct competitor here, but it simply can't tick as many boxes as well as the Focus does.
