Used Renault Megane R.S. for sale

This particular Megane R.S. came along in 2017, being unveiled at the Frankfurt Motorshow. It's the third-generation of hot Megane to be produced by Renault Sport, the division within Renault responsible for motorsport and high-performance versions of selected Renault models.

It gets a bit confusing as although it's the third R.S. Megane, it's actually based on the fourth-generation Megane. Either way, this particular R.S. still provides the usual Renault Sport excellence, which has seen the models develop a popular reputation, famed for excellent handling and driver focus.

In short, this third-gen R.S. offers:

  • Smart design
  • Fine handling
  • Enhanced performance and ability
  • Multiple versions
  • Manual or automatic transmissions

Engines and Driving Experience

Megane RS Trophy 2020

The Megane R.S. is famed for its focused driving experience, and so models reflect this in their seriousness towards suspension and handling set-ups.

Upon launch you could opt for a 280 Sport model, 280 Cup model or 300 Trophy model. You could also spec manual or automatic gearboxes.

The 280 Sport and 280 Cup share the same 276bhp, 1.8-litre engine but the Cup came with a limited-slip-differential, along with having a 10% stiffer suspension, both enhancing handling capabilities. Power was increased to 296bhp in the Trophy, along with even firmer suspension.

The regular 280 Sport is the one to have if you intend to use the car as a daily driver, due to having firm, yet the most forgiving suspension out of the three. The Cup is for the more driver-focused, whereas Trophy owners will be the most likely to take their R.S. on track.

In 2020, the choice was simplified with the facelift. A standard Megane R.S. 300 was joined by a range-topping R.S. Trophy. This meant the standard car received the 296bhp engine, whilst only the Trophy gets the more focused Cup chassis and limited-slip-differential. Only automatic transmissions are available in these later cars.

Practicality and Running Costs

Megane RS Trophy 2018

Practicality and running costs are pretty good when you consider the Megane R.S. is a driver-focused performance car and can do 0-62mph in 5.7/5.8 seconds, dependant on variant.

A useful 5-doors come as standard, and there's also a 434-litre boot as well, meaning it beats the Golf GTi by just over 50 litres. There is also seating for three occupants in the rear too, although adults may have to split their knees on long journeys, whilst those in the middle rear seat won't want to spend a significant time there.

As for running costs, despite the performance of the Megane R.S., over 30mpg is easily achievable, and servicing is also reasonable for a hot hatch and can be taken care of at any Evans Halshaw Renault retailer.

Interior, Technology and Safety

Megane RS Trophy Interior 2020

Depending on how they have been spec'd from factory, R.S. Megane models come with either cloth or alcantara sport seats. In later Trophy models you can even specify some rather incredible and sought-after Recaro bucket seats, which really set the interior off perfectly.

2020 updated cars have naturally smarter interiors, with a portrait touchscreen infotainment display in the centre of the dash, along with a fully-digital instrument cluster display. Older models have an analogue set of dials, and a smaller infotainment screen. These are by no means outdated-looking though, and are still crisp and clear.

Models feature cool safety and tech kit such as cruise control, lane departure warning, reverse camera and high-beam assist. This generation of regular Megane was crash tested in 2015 by Euro NCAP where it received a full five-star safety rating.

Is the Renault Megane R.S. right for me?

It's a tough market for hot hatches, with the Renault Megane R.S. battling strong competition from the likes of the VW Golf GTi, Honda Civic Type R, Ford Focus ST and MINI Cooper S.

The textbook hot hatch has always been the Golf GTi, but sometimes it's criticised for being too good, and therefore some say that it is a little dull.

The Honda Civic Type R goes the other way in being a bit over the top with its styling, while the Focus and MINI have their loyal fans too, but again may not be everyone's cup of tea.

Those who like fine driving dynamics will love the Megane for its precision and feel. It's perhaps an outside the box choice, but like any hot hatch will always appeal to a certain buyer. The only real way is to test drive them all if you cannot decide, but the Megane is sure to tempt keen drivers.
