Kia designed the Stonic to be an entry into the popular world of SUVs. As a result, you get similar driving dynamics to that of a regular supermini, but you get enhanced practicality that comes in the form of a bigger boot and interior.

Engines and Driving Experience
Small crossovers are typically based on a supermini, and the Stonic is no exception having borrowed its underpinnings from the equally excellent Kia Rio. Because of this, the Stonic feels agile despite the increase in size, which is welcome during manoeuvres in tight spaces.
Earlier models were available with a 1.4-litre petrol engine that produced 98bhp and returned up to 49.6mpg. However, it was axed later on because of the turbocharged 1.0-litre engine's popularity. Available with 99 or 118bhp, this unit feels punchier, yet still achieves over 50mpg without too much effort.
A sole 1.6-litre CRDi diesel engine is available for long-distance travellers; it isn't the fastest with 113bhp, but it can return over 55mpg quite comfortably. A six-speed manual gearbox is standard, although a 7-speed automatic is available and offers seamless shifts.
Practicality and Running Costs
All Stonic models come with 5-doors as standard, making it light work to fit a child's seat using the ISOFIX anchor points. There's a decent amount of head and leg room inside the car, although taller passengers in the back may begin to grumble over longer distances. In addition, there are loads of storage compartments and cubby holes dotted around the interior.
At 352 litres, the boot space isn't class-leading, you'll need to consider the Peugeot 2008 (434 litres) or Renault Captur (422 litres) if you need a larger capacity, but the Stonic offers a wide opening for maximum convenience. The boot can grow to 1,155 litres with the rear seats folded flat for added flexibility.

Interior, Technology and Safety
In general, the Stonic will feel familiar to anyone who is well-acquainted with modern cars. A smart, tablet-inspired, touchscreen occupies the top of the centre console, while a number of controls can be operated without the hands straying too far away from the steering wheel.
Generously equipped across the range, entry-level '2' models come with air-conditioning, electric windows, rear parking sensors and Bluetooth connectivity. You'll also get a slick infotainment system that comes with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
GT-Line cars get larger, 17-inch, alloy wheels, LED headlights, automatic air-conditioning and a rear-view camera. The Connect model introduced two-tone paint colours, LED rear lights and keyless entry.
