There was a time when SUVs were reserved for premium manufacturers and working professionals that spent a lot of time off-road. Nissan changed all of that when they introduced the Qashqai, an affordable everyday SUV that could tackle the school run head-on.
Nissan set the trend with the Qashqai, and now SUVs are among the most popular cars in Britain. Despite the stiff competition, Nissan's small SUV has remained a favourite among motorists. And as a result of that, there are plenty to choose from on the used car market.

Engines and Driving Experience

A turbocharged 1.3-litre petrol engine was introduced in 2018 and replaced the outgoing 1.2-litre unit. It's available with 138bhp or 158bhp, which is more than the predecessor's 115bhp. Don't let this put you off the outgoing engine though, it still returns up 53mpg on a combined cycle (compared with 44.9mpg on the latest engine).
If you want a diesel, then the 1.5-litre is the most popular unit that can achieve as high as 74mpg, making it a great all-rounder. A larger 1.6-litre diesel is available too, but you should only go for this if you really need the extra poke for towing.
Practicality and Running Costs
Although the Qashqai seems large, it's actually no longer or wider than the average family hatchback, meaning it should be nice and easy to park. The lofty height and wide opening doors are a godsend when fitting a child's seat into the easily locatable Isofix anchor points.
With a 430-litre boot and a large opening, the Qashqai can carry all of your weekly shopping, as well as transport a pram with ease. An adjustable false floor features, while the parcel shelf can be stored underneath the floor for added convenience.
It's worth noting that the Qashqai has a braked towing capacity ranging between 1,200kg and 1,800kg, but you'll need to opt for the larger 1.6-litre diesel engine for the latter weight.
Affordable and approved servicing is available through your nearest Evans Halshaw Nissan retailer, while Qashqai models occupy insurance groups between 13 and 21 (group 50 being the highest).
Interior, Technology and Safety
Such is the quality of the Qashqai's interior, you'll be wondering why the price isn't higher. Soft touch materials feature in all the right places, while the supportive seats allow you to enjoy complete comfort whilst appreciating just how quiet the Qashqai is on the move.
When it was facelifted in 2018, all models were gifted air-conditioning and an infotainment touchscreen as standard. Opt for the Acenta Premium and you'll get climate control, folding door mirrors, and a NissanConnect infotainment system, which offers Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.
Further up the range you'll unlock a 360-degree camera, which is handy for parking. There's also other luxuries, such as privacy glass and keyless entry.
