06th Dec 2024

By Kenny Longdon

Practicality, it's an important box that needs to be ticked on many people's car buying lists. And for some, the need for more seats fits into this category.

With the standard car offering five seats, usually two in the front and three in the back, the seven-seat car, otherwise known as seven-seater (7-seater) can be a fine alternative for those needing a car to accommodate for more passengers.

Below we list our top picks for the best cars which offer a 7-seat version, catering for all tastes, with both internal combustion, hybrid and fully-electric choices.

KIA EV9

KIA have certainly enhanced their reputation further in the last decade or so, showcasing fine alternatives, to try and stop the dominant and ever-popular German manufacturers of this world.

KIA's head-turning new design language certainly makes them stand out for the right reasons, and in the crowded and popular SUV market, you definitely need something special, and the EV9 is certainly one of those models.

EV9 has a blocky, properly futuristic aura about it, and it's also fully-electric with up to 349 miles of range, with both rear and all-wheel drive variants available, and a 5-seat option available, if you don't require seven seats.

Interior ambiance is superb, feeling ultra-premium, and being a KIA means it's loaded with tech. 0 to 62mph can be as fast as 5.4 seconds, which is impressive for a car this size. There's also a 333-litre boot in the 7-seat variant, which increases to a colossal 828 litres of space, when lowering the third row of seats.

Land Rover Defender 130

Land Rover Defender 130 Side Profile

If you're after a 7-seat vehicle which ticks the practicality box, as well as the style, reputation and off-road ability boxes, then the Defender 130 could be ideal for you.

It's by far the most practical Defender available, actually offering 8-seats as standard, whilst you can also find 7-seat 'Captains' chair variants too, for those who want even more comfort for their passengers.

Unlike many trendy SUVs these days, the 130 is excellent off-road too, and if the 130 is seemingly too large for your needs, then the 110 can be had with a 7-seat option too. Alternatively, the Defender 90 can be found with the more familiar 5-seat set-up, with a 'jump seat' option also available.

You can spec a 130 Defender with a characterful V8 too, offering plenty of performance, with 0 to 62mph happening in as low as 5.2 seconds, whilst offering 389 litres of boot space with all seats in place, rising to 1,232 litres with the third row of seats folded.

Dacia Jogger

After a more budget friendly 7-seat car? Then the Dacia Jogger has you covered. It blends the length of an estate car with the space of an MPV, whilst also offering the rugged style of an SUV.

It comes with the essentials as standard, so there's cruise control, Bluetooth and smartphone connectivity, whilst higher spec models get the enhanced upgrades like keyless entry, automatic air-con and front and rear parking sensors.

With all seats in play, you get a 212-litre boot, which is about the same as your average city car, but the boot space can be expanded up to 1,819 litres when lowering seats. With 0 to 62mph happening in around 10 seconds, depending on version, it's not rapid, but should be okay in keeping the flow of traffic.

Hyundai Santa Fe

Just like Kia, Hyundai have also enhanced their cars even further in the last decade or so, and the Santa Fe shows this progression with its futuristic design language and choice of hybrid powertrains.

And, it does stand out, which is ideal for those who don't want to blend in to the sea of SUVs out there, of which there are many.

Fold the third row of seats, and you get a massive 628 litres of boot space, but with all the rows in place, the boot is only really big enough for three carry-on size suitcases.

Performance is decent, with the hybrid petrol set-up offering over 200bhp and offering 0 to 62mph in 9.6 seconds or so, whilst delivering around 40mpg.

Citroën Berlingo

Based on a van, the Citroën Berlingo shouldn't be overlooked when thinking of a decent 7-seat vehicle. After all, it's been around since 1996, setting a solid foundation and gaining a lot of respect along the way.

It's available with petrol, diesel and fully-electric options, along with providing lots of space and practicality, especially in the 'XL' version, which is the one with seven seats, as the 'M' versions have five seats.

The electric version offers a range of just over 200 miles, but boot space is where the Berlingo really impresses, as the XL offers 1,050 litres of space, rising to 4,000 litres with all the seats folded, effectively turning into what it's based on, a really practical van.

Sure, it may not be as trendy as an SUV, but for sheer practicality, the Berlingo can certainly offer plenty of space and quirks.

VW ID. Buzz

VW ID Buzz

The VW bus has always been cool since its introduction in 1950. It's of course gone through different generations, six to be precise, with the latter few seemingly being a bit bland compared to the classics, although that has changed with what is the seventh generation, the VW ID. Buzz.

It's fully-electric, and offers up to 293 miles of range. But if you're wanting perhaps one of the most head turning vehicles in this list, then the ID. Buzz has the ability as it perfectly captures the classic VW bus charm, but in a bang up-to-date package.

There's a decent-sized 306-litre boot with all the seats in place, rising to a useful 2,469 with the all the rear seats dropped.

Being electric, it's pretty quick too, with 0 to 62mph taking around 7.9 seconds, or as low as 6.1 seconds with the GTX version, which is around the same as the iconic Golf GTI.

Range Rover

Range Rover LWB Side Profile

It's no surprise to see the popular Range Rover in this list, as it's perhaps the most luxurious 7-seat vehicle you can buy, which also happens to be excellent off-road, too.

A massive 725-litre boot is available in 5-seat mode, whilst it drops to 229 litres with all 7 seats in use, but the interior is full of luxury feeling materials, and plenty of comfort; it's essentially a limousine-like SUV. And let's not forget the popularity of a Range Rover, it is perhaps one of the most, if not the most sought-after in this list in terms of status and style.

0 to 62mph takes around six or seven seconds, depending on spec, which for a car of this size is rather impressive, considering its weight. If you're looking for a luxury people mover, then the long wheelbase Range Rover is a fine choice.

Peugeot 5008

Peugeot e-5008 Side Profile

The design of Peugeot SUVs has gone from strength to strength ever since this more feline like design came into play. Now, with this updated 5008, the sophisticated and polished design looks better than ever and ensures Peugeot still produce some of the smartest SUVs out there.

What's more, this new 5008 is available with a petrol, petrol hybrid and even a fully-electric E-5008 too (pictured).

Even with all seven seats in place, the 5008 offers 348 litres of boot space, which rises to a colossal 916-litre space even with 5 seats still in place.

And if you think the E-5008 will offer a poor range due to its size, you'd be wrong, with over 414 miles of range possible, it's rather impressive, with a 0 to 62mph about average in this sector with 9.7 seconds the resulting acceleration.

Skoda Kodiaq

Skoda Kodiaq Side Profile Angle

The Škoda Kodiaq is a fine 7-seat vehicle, which sits in the mid-range of this list in terms of cost, offering more than entry-level examples like the Dacia Jogger, but sitting under the ultra-luxurious Range Rover.

It comes as no surprise really, with a 340-litre boot with all seats in place, rising to 845 litres with 5 seats in place, or a van-like 2,305 litres with all the rear seats folded.

The interior is a nice place to be, it's fully-digital and has a neat vibe, with all the essentials like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto available.

Diesel, petrol, along with mild and plug-in hybrid versions are available, all with great economy and acceleration from 0 to 62mph ranging from 7.8 to 9.7 seconds.

BMW X7

BMW X7 M60i Driving

For those looking for a 7-seat vehicle that still offers a dynamic, yet luxurious experience, then the BMW X7 will impress on both accounts.

It's more dynamic on-road than the aforementioned Range Rover, and therefore has that typical BMW sharpness about it. Inside, it's luxurious and as refined as you'd expect, with a digital vibe contrasting perfectly with the luxury feel.

There's a more than useful, hatchback-like 326 litres of boot space when all seats are in use, rising to 750 litres with 5 seats in play. Fold all the rear seats, and you get a massive 2,120 litres to play with.

There's a range of engines too, with the silky six-cylinder BMW layout coming in a petrol mild hybrid and a diesel variant, whilst a range-topping M60i V8 engine sits at the top of the range. All are quick, with 0 to 62mph ranging from 4.7 to 5.9 seconds.
