Vauxhall Combo

The Combo Cargo is Vauxhall's answer for the compact van, with this particular version coming along in late 2018, sitting below the Vivaro and the Movano.

It's the most compact panel van in the range, but there's a smaller Corsavan that's essentially a car-based alternative if you don't fancy a 'proper van'.

Something for everyone in the Vauxhall van range then, and again like many vans nowadays the Combo Cargo is almost identical to the Citroën Berlingo and Peugeot Partner.

Highlights of the Combo Cargo are listed below:

  • Good value buying used
  • High payload ratings
  • Neat styling
  • Plenty of engine choices
  • Multiple versions

Economy, Towing, and Performance

Vauxhall Combo

In true van style there's plenty of diesel engines available when buying a used Combo Cargo. Usually you'll find 1.6-litre engines with varying levels of power and a 1.5-litre - which actually offers the most power.

There's also a 1.2-litre petrol, which will see between 36mpg and 44mpg depending on exact spec. The diesels will return between 40mpg and 50mpg.

Looking to tow with a Vauxhall Combo Cargo? You'll be able to tow 750kg unbraked - as is the norm and up to 1,350kg with a braked trailer - but this again will depend on spec.

Performance is decent too, with the Combo Cargo feeling nippy and compact, while also offering decent levels of comfort. You'd be best off getting a petrol version for town work, whilst the diesels will suit long-distance jobs.

Bodystyles, Payload, and Capacity

Vauxhall Combo

Bodystyles come in two types - L1 and L2, the former being a short-wheelbase whilst the latter is a long-wheelbase.

Payload is good for a small van with a maximum capability of 1002kg.

Capacity is also good with the L1 featuring a 1,781mm load length; the L2 offers more with 2,131mm. Both heights are pretty much the same with 1,236 in the L1 and 1,243 in the L2. Both versions of the van offer a load width of 1,630mm.

It's always best to double check exactly with the used Combo you're buying to make sure certain loads will fit your requirements.

Interior, Technology, and Safety

Vauxhall Combo

Interiors are simplistic and neat and offer plenty of space considering this is a compact van. There's lots of in-cab storage, which comes in handy.

Tech-wise, a nice central 8-inch infotainment screen is available with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto available in higher specification models.

Standard models do get DAB and Bluetooth, though.

As for safety, there's plenty of kit available in the range, with Sportive models and above featuring an alarm. Elsewhere in the range, higher spec models include the following:

  • Lane Keep Assist
  • Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Traffic Sign Recognition
  • Hill Descent Control
  • Automatic Emergency Braking
  • Grip Control
  • Forward Collision Alert

Is the Vauxhall Combo right for me?

If you need a small, neat and comfortable van, then the Vauxhall Combo Cargo is well worth a look.

That said, it's siblings are worth a look at too - in the form of Citroën Berlingo and Peugeot Partner which have a pinch of French flair in their designs.

Elsewhere, the Ford Transit Connect is worth considering, whilst the VW Caddy is also an excellent small van offering lots of quality.
