Launched in 1996, the Renault Scenic has engineered itself quite the reputation as a textbook MPV. This fourth-generation Scenic was launched in 2016 and was made until 2019. It's sharper and better-looking than ever, but does it still come up trumps in today's tough used MPV market - especially with the rise of the SUV?
On the face of it, the Renault Scenic offers buyers a realm of positives, including:

Engines and Driving Experience
It's a capable MPV the Scenic, obviously it's by no means a sporty vehicle but it does provide a sound driving experience and offers a good level of everyday comfort and refinement.
The Scenic's 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol in the TCe 130 is decent enough around town and doesn't feel slow against the competition, thanks to its 11-second 0 to 62mph time. It will also return 48mpg too. A 1.0-litre petrol is available as well, taking a little longer to reach 62mph, but offering the same economy.
Diesel engines are the main focus in the Scenic range however, with a 1.5-litre kicking things off. You get 108bhp, enough for a 12-second 0 to 62mph time, but what you lack in pace, you'll make up for in economy with over 70mpg possible. More power is available, but this entry-level diesel is the best bet, as the others don't offer a substantial increase in bhp and happen to be less economical.
A 1.5-litre hybrid assist turbodiesel completes the line-up, and features an electric motor to aid efficiency. It's just as quick as the 1.2-litre petrol and 1.5-litre diesel, but will return 80mpg. It's a little more expensive to start with though, so bare that in mind.
Practicality and Running Costs
As MPVs go, the Scenic has always offered decent practicality, and this particular generation is no different. The 572-litre boot is class-leading, and can be enlarged further to 1,554 litres, with the rear seats folded flat for van-like practicality.
Running costs are good too; this is a family vehicle after all. Insurance lies between group 10 and 20, so won't break the bank.
As for servicing, this can be taken care of at any Evans Halshaw Renault dealer. It's worth noting that the Scenic comes standard on 20-inch alloy wheels. Although this gives the Scenic kerb appeal, quite literally, 20-inch tyres are not exactly the cheapest tyres out there - just something to bare in mind.
Interior, Technology and Safety
Renault tend to not mess about when it comes to safety, and that's why the Scenic was awarded the full five-star Euro NCAP rating. It comes as no surprise when you see the amount of standard safety and tech kit on offer.
The Scenic therefore gets Active Emergency Braking, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Departure Warning, Safe Distance Warning, Traffic Sign Recognition and Blind Spot Warning. The Scenic also features auto-dipping headlights, front, rear and even side parking sensors and a reversing camera. It even has Easy Park Assist, to do the parking for you.
Interior style is way ahead of previous-generation models, especially with the new R-Link 2 infotainment system with sat-nav. Instruments are analogue and clear, but backlit in a way to make them seem modern and fresh.
Overall, the Scenic is levels ahead of previous generations, and gives buyers something to think about before rushing off to buy an SUV.
Is the Renault Scenic right for me?
If you don't want to go down the route of an SUV, this particular generation of Scenic is one of the sharpest looking MPVs out there. And with Renault ending the production of the Scenic in 2019, it may be one of the last decent mainstream MPVs available.
This somewhat smarter appearance means the Scenic goes up against MPVs such as the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer and the quirky Citroën C4 Spacetourer.
The BMW has the badge appeal and offers higher quality, and the Citroën will offer more overall space, but it's quite hard to ignore the Renault for the best overall package.
