Red Suzuki Baleno Exterior Front Static

The Suzuki Baleno is a 5-door supermini that offers a good level of practicality as well as a decent amount of kit as standard. Although production stopped for the UK market in 2019, there's plenty of excellent used examples available that are viable alternatives to the Swift supermini and smaller Celerio city car.

The supermini segment is fairly congested with a lot of top-quality competition, but the Baleno has a range of features that make it a great left-field option, such as:

  • Simple engine line-up, including a hybrid powertrain
  • Good fuel economy
  • Spacious cabin
  • More expressive interior design than other Suzuki models
  • Nicely-sized boot

Engines and Driving Experience

Red Suzuki Baleno Exterior Rear Static

Suzuki have limited the engine choice to just two powertrains - one traditional 109bhp 1.0-litre petrol engine and an 89bhp 1.2-litre mild hybrid powertrain. Neither are rapid by any means, but they do feel more peppy than what their 0 to 62mph times of 11.4 and 12.3 seconds respectively suggest.

The engines are fairly responsive and have a sense of urgency when planting your foot. The car is also extremely light, weighing significantly less than rivals such as the Ford Fiesta. This makes for a fun driving experience, but larger imperfections are more noticeable, as well as wind and road noise.

Fuel economy is impressive, with the mild hybrid achieving up to 70mpg and the petrol engine offering circa 55mpg, meaning trips to refuel will be less regular than some rivals.

Practicality and Running Costs

Suzuki Baleno Boot

Practicality is one of the Baleno's strongest suits, thanks to its larger than normal dimensions. Carrying four passengers in comfort is no mean feat in the supermini class, but the Baleno does this with relative ease thanks to plenty of head and legroom throughout. You can fit five adults, but the individual sat in the middle may feel a little hard done by.

320 litres of boot space is also enough to rival cars from the class above, providing more than enough room for the weekly shop or a couple of bags of luggage. Fold the back seats and you'll have access to 756 litres of space for larger bits of cargo.

The Baleno doesn't require excessive amounts of cash to run either thanks to its small and economical engines. Insurance resides between groups 13 and 16 (out of 50) dependent upon specification. Low cost servicing and maintenance can also be carried out at any Evans Halshaw dealership.

Interior, Technology and Safety

Suzuki Baleno Interior

Whilst the Baleno boasts impressive levels of practicality, rivals have the upper hand when it comes to interior design. The hard, low cost plastics and materials often seen in Suzuki cars returns within the Baleno's interior, but its overall design features more curves than other Suzuki models, making it more eye-catching.

In terms of equipment, the entry-level 'SZ3' gets automatic headlights, DAB radio and a CD player. In a mid-life update, the 'SZ-T' took over as the entry-level model and came better equipped with satellite navigation and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, so keep an eye out for those models (or the range-topping 'SZ5') if your budget can stretch that far.

A range of safety features can be found on the Baleno, including:

  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Radar brake support
  • ISOFIX mounting points
  • Hill hold control
  • Electronic stability program (ESP)

Is the Suzuki Baleno right for me?

If you're after a spacious supermini that doesn't cost a lot to run the Suzuki Baleno will be right up your street. It has a good list of available equipment and a decent driving experience to ensure miles spent behind the wheel are more enjoyable.

Rivals include the Vauxhall Corsa and Volkswagen Polo, which are popular choices amongst British motorists. The Skoda Fabia and Kia Rio can also compete with the Baleno in terms of overall practicality; if you need the space, they're definitely worth considering.
