Orange Suzuki Swift Exterior Front Static

As one of their best-known models, the Suzuki Swift is a supermini that's fun to drive and fairly practical. Hybrid technology is also available to increase economy and reduce running costs.

Popular amongst younger drivers, the Swift is a great choice if you want something larger than the Ignis city car, but not quite as large as the Baleno supermini. Other reasons to consider the Swift include:

  • Good amounts of kit as standard
  • Automatic and manual gearboxes available
  • Spacious interior
  • Sportier Swift Sport variant for maximum fun

Engines and Driving Experience

The Swift offers a variety of petrol engines to suit different requirements and lifestyles, including mild hybrid powertrains. The most common include:

  • 1.0-litre: 109bhp, 0 to 62mph in 10 seconds and circa 56mpg combined.
  • 1.0-litre mild hybrid: 109bhp, 0 to 62mph in 10.6 seconds and circa 66mpg combined.
  • 1.2-litre: 89bhp, 0 to 62mph in 11.9 seconds and circa 52mpg combined.
  • 1.2-litre mild hybrid: 82bhp, 0 to 62mph in 13.1 seconds and circa 59.7mpg combined.

All Swift models are fairly agile and good fun to drive, but the Swift Sport will put the biggest smile on your face. A 1.4-litre petrol engine will be found within the engine bay of a Swift Sport, producing 138bhp and a 0 to 62mph time of 8.1 seconds.

Swift Sport models from 2020 onwards will see a 127bhp mild hybrid powertrain replace the internal combustion engine, which increases the 0 to 62mph time to 9.1 seconds.

Practicality and Running Costs

Suzuki Swift Boot

Superminis are often used for two passengers only, but from time to time you may want to have your friends in the back too. The Suzuki Swift is capable of this, and can carry four average-sized adults with few complaints thanks to decent amounts of head and legroom. Taller adults may have their legs pressed up against the seats if sat in the rear however.

Whilst significantly less than class leaders, 275 litres of boot space is decent and enough for the weekly shop. In the cases where you need the extra space, simply drop the 60/40 split-folding rear seats and you'll have access to a 579-litre space. Be careful not to catch the fairly high boot lip when loading heavier items though.

Running costs are generally low, but getting insured may cost more than what rivals require; ranging between groups 19 and 35 (out of 50) dependent upon specification. Low cost servicing and maintenance can also be carried out at your local Evans Halshaw dealership.

Interior, Technology and Safety

Suzuki Swift Interior

Suzuki often prioritise durability over luxury within their interior and that's evident within the Swift's interior. Various bits of the dashboard are made up by harder, glossy plastic and it all feels well screwed together, so it won't have a problem dealing with the scuffs of daily life.

In terms of equipment, even the entry-level 'SZ-L' comes with a decent amount of kit as standard such as adaptive cruise control, DAB radio and an LCD infotainment screen. Further up the range, higher specifications such as the 'SZ5' come with a touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, satellite navigation and keyless entry.

Safety equipment includes:

  • Lane departure warning
  • Dual sensor brake support
  • Blind spot monitor
  • Traffic sign recognition
  • Rear parking sensors

Is the Suzuki Swift right for me?

The Suzuki Swift has been slugging it out in the supermini class for a while now and is definitely a worthy contender if you're after a car that offers a fun driving experience and a decent amount of kit, especially in Swift Sport guise.

But it's a competitive market and there's plenty of other worthy rivals to consider. The Ford Fiesta and Vauxhall Corsa are some of Britain's most popular cars and are excellent value for money, while the SEAT Ibiza and MINI Hatchback offer more expressive designs if you want to catch the eyes of other road users.
