Used Hyundai Kona for sale

Small SUVs are now very much the go-to vehicle of choice for many consumers. Chunky looks complemented by attractive running costs and enhanced practicality ensures this type of vehicle shows no signs of slowing in popularity.

But what makes the Hyundai Kona, another small SUV, stand out from the likes of the Nissan Juke and Renault Captur to name but a couple?

On first impressions, the Kona offers:

  • Eye-catching design
  • Ability to personalise
  • Comfortable to drive
  • High levels of standard equipment
  • 5-year warranty from new

Read on below to find out more about the Hyundai Kona, and whether it is the right used vehicle for you.

Engines and Driving Experience

KONA Exterior Motion

Small peppy engines that are frugal are the trend in many small SUVs and the Kona followers suit, with a 1.0-litre three-cylinder producing 118bhp. This ensures for a rather leisurely 11.6 second 0 to 62mph time, but it will return up to 45mpg.

Older models, before the 2021 facelift did cater for a 1.6-litre with 174bhp. This could be found in the unique and interesting Iron Man Edition, which could hit 62mph from a standstill in around 7.5 seconds, which is much more like it for those wanting a more responsive drive, but you'll take a dent in the economy figures. Although 37mpg isn't too bad for the hike in performance.

A hybrid, using a 1.6-litre petrol engine along with an electric motor is also available, which offers up to 56mpg. There is also a fully-electric Kona, having been released in early 2021 with 300 miles possible from a full charge.

Practicality and Running Costs

KONA Boot Space

At 374 litres, the Kona's boot is decent, but trails slightly behind the Nissan Juke and Renault Captur, which both offer 422 litres. However, 1,156 litres is accessible when the rear seats are folded flat, which is still behind the Nissan and Renault when their seats are folded, but it's not a bad space and will come in handy if shifting furniture or large possessions.

Running costs for Hyundai cars are not bad at all, considering the extended 5-year warranty. With between 37 and 56mpg possible from the range and a state-of-the-art electric version further extending the Kona's attractive running costs, this is one attractive small SUV to run.

Servicing shouldn't cause any surprises either and can be done at any Evans Halshaw Hyundai retailer.

Interior, Technology and Safety

KONA Interior

First seen in 2017, the Kona interior is rather smart and doesn't really feel outdated by modern standards. The dials are still analogue in pre-facelift models, but they are smart and clear, and the large central infotainment screen is still enough to make it feel nice and modern.

Facelifted cars in early 2021 did, however, get updated digital dials. They give the already smart and well-made interior an even sharper look.

Hyundai models offer impressive standard kit, which gives even entry-level buyers some cool tech. In the 2021 Kona, the SE Connect is the entry-level trim and features air-con, cruise control and even a rear-view camera.

A five-star Euro NCAP rating means the Kona doesn't scrimp on safety either. The range has the following safety features:

  • Driver fatigue monitoring
  • Hill hold
  • Lane-keeping assistance
  • Blind-spot monitoring
  • Rear cross-traffic alert
  • Autonomous emergency braking

Is the Hyundai Kona right for me?

In the ultra-competitive small SUV market, the Kona does enough to make a solid case for itself.

It's arguably one of the best-looking choices out there, and looks more unique and futuristic than most. The 5-year warranty from new means used cars under five years old will be even more attractive.

We mentioned the two heavy weights of this market, the Captur and Juke. Both having been updated recently, too. The Hyundai is for those who want to stand out, and if we are being totally honest, all three offer a decent overall package; it will all come down to personal taste.
