On sale from 2009 to 2016, the Hyundai ix35 was essentially a Tucson with a new name, but recently, Hyundai have brought back the Tucson name and dropped the ix35. This means the ix35 can now be acquired in the used market with a substantial saving, making it rather tempting.
The 1.7-litre diesel is the best bet for most drivers, as it returns over 50mpg whilst offering little compromise in performance when compared to other alternatives in the range.
Despite its age, the interior is smart offering clear and crisp dials and easy-to-use controls. It does feel a little cheap compared to the newer Tucson, but this is to be expected, and the ix35 used price reflects this. Blue backlighting on the dials and climate controls are a nice touch and makes for a pleasant interior ambiance.
Entry-level S models come with air-conditioning and alloy wheels, but we'd recommend the SE as you get toys that make daily life easier, such as Bluetooth, a USB port, heated seats, a multi-function steering wheel and cruise control.
Practicality is very good, with the boot offering a spacious 591 litres. To put that into perspective, a newer Ford Kuga offers 475 litres. Servicing and maintenance shouldn't cost the earth and can be carried out at your local Evans Halshaw Hyundai retailer.
