Used Toyota Land Cruiser Exterior

The Toyota Land Cruiser is a full-size SUV, capable (in some versions) of seating up to seven occupants.

It sits at the very top of the used Toyota SUV range, far larger than the RAV4 and just above the Highlander, which also has seven seats. Reasons to buy a Toyota Land Cruiser include:

  • Legendary build quality and reliability
  • Extremely capable off-road
  • Huge amounts of standard specification
  • Roomy on the inside with space for seven
  • Endlessly practical

Engines and Driving Experience

Used Toyota Land Cruiser Exterior, Rear

There are a couple of engines you'll find with modern used Land Cruisers sold in the UK:

  • 2.8-litre turbo diesel: 175bhp, 29mpg, 0 to 62mph in 12.7 seconds (from 2018)
  • 3.0-litre turbo diesel: 188bhp, 29mpg, 0 to 62mph in 11.0 seconds (until 2018)

The Land Cruiser is a leisurely performer, and is designed for pulling power rather than outright speed. The 2.8-litre's huge 332lb ft of torque means that towing capacity is 3,000kg, making it one of the best towing cars you can buy. Most used Land Cruisers have an automatic gearbox; only the unpopular 3-door came with a manual.

To drive, the Land Cruiser certainly gives you a 'king of the road' feeling, thanks to its massive size and high-up driving position. Though not necessarily intended as a luxury vehicle, the soft and cushy seats and better than expected refinement mean it's more than capable of being a long-distance cruiser.

Practicality and Running Costs

Used Toyota Land Cruiser Boot Space

Practicality depends on how the used Land Cruiser you're looking at is specified. Most will be family-friendly 5-door 7-seaters, but 3-door 5-seaters as well a commercial-spec 2-seaters can also be found in the used car classifieds, although they are rare.

In 5-door form, there is a huge amount of interior room, particularly in the front two rows, although the rearmost passengers are decently catered for as well. Boot space is virtually non-existent with all seven seats in place, though without them you are treated to 640 litres of capacity, which will be more than enough for most people.

Running costs are in line with other large SUVs, although it's likely to be one of the most expensive Toyota models to own in terms of fuel, servicing and insurance expenses. It will pay you back in terms of durability though, providing it's maintained properly. Servicing can be taken care of by any Evans Halshaw dealership.

Interior, Technology and Safety

Used Toyota Land Cruiser Interior

There is a certain charm in the utilitarian nature of the Land Cruiser's interior, with ergonomics and functionality being given priority over any sort of design flair. Everything is extremely well put together, with the leather seats and wood/metal trim bringing a touch of class to the cabin.

Technology is decent too, with adaptive cruise control, parking sensors, front and rear camera system, satellite navigation and fully electric seats all featured as standard on the popular Invincible model. The 8-inch touchscreen multimedia system works fine but does not feature Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.

Safety is a priority for Toyota whenever they release a new car, and Land Cruisers are fitted with:

  • Seven airbags
  • Trailer sway control
  • Downhill assist control
  • Pre-collision warning with auto braking
  • Lane departure warning

Is the Toyota Land Cruiser right for me?

If you live out in the sticks, need a car with immense off-road capability or simply want a large 7-seat SUV, then the Land Cruiser may well be for you. If you need all three boxes ticked in one go, then it's definitely for you.

It's as capable on the rough stuff as any car out there, and will haul just about anything you need to tow with ease.

You're not short for choice when it comes to 7-seat SUVs however, with the Kia Sorento and Hyundai Santa Fe both good options, if a little less rugged. The only cars that can match the Land Cruiser for off-road ability are the Land Rover Defender and Discovery, with other premium SUVs such as the BMW X5, Mercedes-Benz GLE and Audi Q5 much more suited to on-road driving.
