Used Toyota Highlander

The Toyota Highlander is a ginormous 7-seat SUV with a standard-fit hybrid powertrain to ensure running costs remain reasonable. It's been on sale since 2021.

It sits near the top of the used Toyota SUV range, providing more space than a RAV4 and better on-road performance than the Land Cruiser. Reasons to buy a used Highlander include:

  • Remarkable levels of space and practicality
  • Self-charging hybrid powertrain as standard
  • Reasonable running costs
  • Well kitted-out
  • Extremely safe family vehicle

Engines and Driving Experience

Used Toyota Highlander Rear

With used Highlanders, there's just one engine and gearbox combination:

  • 2.5-litre petrol/electric hybrid AWD: 241bhp, 40mpg, 0 to 62mph in 8.3 seconds

It's a powerful unit that pulls strongly up to motorway speeds, settling down into a quiet and refined cruise once you're up to speed. The vast wheelbase and relatively soft suspension combine to provide an extremely comfortable ride.

Intelligent all-wheel drive is included on every used Highlander in the UK, as is a CVT automatic gearbox which is smooth and efficient. A 2,000kg towing capacity is good too; more than other hybrid cars of this type such as the Hyundai Santa Fe.

The Highlander's size does become apparent in multi-storey car parks and other small spaces, but the 360-degree camera (equipped on high-spec models) helps to guide you in and out of tight parking spots.

Practicality and Running Costs

Used Toyota Highlander Boot Space

The Highlander is class-leading in terms of practicality. Its sizeable dimensions mean interior room is vast, with adults comfortably sitting three abreast in the second row of seats. The third row provides plenty of room for kids, and there are cupholders back there, too.

With all seven seats in place, the Highlander has a boot capacity of 332 litres, not dissimilar to the one found on the C-HR and enough for suitcases or pushchairs. Fold the rearmost seats down to unveil a completely flat 658 litres of room, which increases to a gargantuan 1,909 litres with the second row dropped as well.

Running costs are better than rivals, the self-charging hybrid powertrain not only lowering fuel costs but also reducing wear and tear on brake parts so they have to be changed less often. Servicing is no more expensive than a normal petrol car of this type and can be carried out at Evans Halshaw dealerships.

Interior, Technology and Safety

Used Toyota Highlander Interior

The interior of the Highlander is functional rather than beautiful, although there are some very nice soft-touch materials and the leather seats are just lovely. Build quality is as we've come to expect from modern Toyotas: excellent.

Standard kit is fantastic too. All Highlander models have heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, triple-zone climate control, a panoramic roof and an electric tailgate. Reversing sensors and a rear-view camera are there to aid with parking. The infotainment system functions in an okay fashion, but in truth you're better off connecting your phone via Bluetooth and using Android Auto or Apple CarPlay.

The Highlander can be presumed to be a very safe vehicle. Not only will it hold up well in an accident, it has an abundance of tech to help prevent them from occurring in the first place, such as:

  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Road sign assist
  • Pre-collision warning with auto braking
  • Lane departure warning
  • Pedestrian and cyclist detection

Is the Toyota Highlander right for me?

The Highlander caters for anyone who wants an extremely roomy 7-seat SUV, especially those who want something that will provide them with hassle-free, comfortable motoring.

That it comes standard with a super-efficient hybrid powertrain is an extra bonus which, paired with decent performance and a high driving position, gives you all of the benefits of a full-blown SUV with more affordable running costs.

While the Highlander is very competent, there are lots of competitors out there. The Hyundai Santa Fe and Kia Sorento really are very good, while the Land Rover Discovery and Defender also offer 7-seat versions. The VW Touareg and Skoda Kodiaq have better infotainment systems and may be considered by some to be slightly nicer inside.
