The Toyota C-HR is a mid-size crossover with plenty of style and the option of petrol and self-charging hybrid powertrains.

It has been on sale in the UK since 2017 and sits in the Toyota range just below the RAV4 SUV, providing more design flair and sportier handling than its slightly larger sibling. Other reasons to buy a used Toyota C-HR include:

  • Plentiful availability of used hybrid models
  • Stylish inside and out
  • Very well equipped as standard
  • Fitted with all the latest safety tech
  • Affordable running costs

Engines and Driving Experience

Used Toyota C-HR Exterior, Driving

Used Toyota C-HRs come with either turbo petrol or self-charging hybrid powertrains. When browsing the used market, you'll come across three different engine options:

  • 1.2-litre turbo petrol: 114bhp, 44mpg, 0 to 62mph in 10.9 seconds
  • 1.8-litre petrol/electric hybrid: 120bhp, 56.5mpg, 0 to 62mph in 11 seconds
  • 2.0-litre petrol/electric hybrid: 181bhp, 53.3mpg, 0 to 62mph in 8.2 seconds

The 1.2-litre turbo petrol provides adequate performance and is the only C-HR you can buy with a manual gearbox. Auto AWD models can also be found, but they are rare.

For maximum fuel economy, you'll want the 1.8-litre hybrid, while the top-spec 2.0-litre hybrid provides a good deal more performance without a big fuel economy penalty.

On the road the C-HR feels very well engineered, the suspension having been tuned for an enjoyable driving experience as well as a comfortable ride.

Practicality and Running Costs

Used Toyota C-HR Boot Space

Practicality is decent, the raised ride height making it easy to get in and out of and the back seats providing plenty of head and legroom. One consideration is the high-up, hidden position of the exterior rear door handle which makes it difficult for children to reach, but ISOFIX child seat anchor points are present in the rear. The small rear window and black roof lining does mean it's a bit dark back there, however.

Boot space is equivalent to a family hatchback rather than other, more conventionally-designed SUVs, owing to the car's sloping roof line. It's still plenty big enough for suitcases and pushchairs, however.

Running costs are reasonable on the petrol-engined versions, and very good on the self-charging hybrid models. On the hybrids, excellent fuel economy is paired with servicing  costs that are no more expensive than a normal petrol car, and can be carried out by Evans Halshaw dealerships.

Interior, Technology and Safety

Used Toyota C-HR Interior

The interior of the C-HR marked a step-change in terms of quality for Toyota. Soft-touch materials and eye-catching design features such as the wrap-around dashboard and diamond pattern on the door cards, make the C-HR a really nice place to spend time.

Standard equipment is excellent too, with all models featuring dual-zone climate control, reversing camera, cruise control and alloy wheels. Infotainment is provided by Toyota's 'Touch 2' system, an 8-inch touchscreen which houses media, phone connectivity and (on higher grades) satellite navigation.

The C-HR is kitted out with all the latest safety tech, with advanced features such as:

  • Lane departure warning
  • Automatic high-beam assist
  • Pre-collision system with auto braking
  • Stability and traction control

Is the Toyota C-HR right for me?

Need a spacious family car but want something that's a bit more stylish? The C-HR may well be the answer, with coupé-like design and a contemporary interior, the C-HR was intended to appeal to the heart as well as the head.

It also provides you with roomy back seats and a good, if not brilliant, amount of boot space as well as excellent fuel economy from the hybrid engines. This makes it perfect for day-to-day life.

If the C-HR is not your thing, or you're after pure practicality, then there are plenty of alternatives. The Volkswagen Tiguan and SEAT Ateca are just two of them, while the larger Ford Kuga and Nissan Qashqai are also worthy contenders in this market.
