Audi Q5 side profile

The Audi Q5 is a premium family SUV that offers a spacious interior alongside a host of efficient engines.

Occupying the middle-ground between the larger Q7 and the smaller Q3, the Q5 offers a great blend of practicality and performance. This section of the market is pretty congested, but the Q5 stands out because of its upmarket cabin design and high levels of comfort.

These are the main reasons why you should consider a used Audi Q5:

  • Efficient range of engines
  • Available with plug-in hybrid technology
  • High-quality interior design
  • Spacious cabin
  • Big boot

Engines and Driving Experience

Audi Q5 front quarter

The Q5 offers a great blend of comfort and driving engagement, meaning it doesn't wallow in corners, nor does it feel excessively firm over bumps. As you'd expect from an Audi, the Q5's cabin is quiet at motorway speeds, making for pleasant journeys.

Each model comes with Audi's Quattro all-wheel drive system, so you'll have plenty of grip on muddy roads or loose surfaces. When you're driving around normally, the Q5 will only power the front wheels to save fuel.

Petrol / Hybrid

  • 50 TFSI e plug-in hybrid: 2.0-litre producing 297bhp (0 to 62mph in 6.1 seconds and up to 188.3mpg with fully charged batteries)
  • 55 TFSI e plug-in hybrid: 2.0-litre producing 365bhp (0 to 62mph in 5.3 seconds and up to 176.6mpg with fully charged batteries)

Practicality and Running Costs

Audi Q5 boot

There's plenty to admire about the Q5's interior design and boot. Tall adults won't have an issue getting comfortable in the rear because of the amount of head and legroom available. In addition, there are a host of useful cubby holes and storage compartments, which just make life easier.

Courtesy of the rear seats that can slide forwards or back, there's between 550 and 610 litres of boot space available. It's worth noting that going for a hybrid model will see this reduce to 450 litres of space to accommodate the batteries. Fold the rear seats down and you'll have up to 1,550 litres of space at your disposal.

The Q5 occupies insurance groups between 27 and 45 (out of 50), so it's worth getting some quotes for the higher-spec models before committing to them. Affordable servicing and maintenance is available through all Evans Halshaw retailers.

Interior, Technology and Safety

Audi Q5 interior

Typical of Audi, the Q5's cabin boasts an elegant design that's complemented by an upmarket selection of materials. The tablet-esque infotainment display, which sits at the top of the dash, may not be to everyone's taste, but the vibrant display and easy-to-navigate menus make up for this.

Entry-level Sport models are well-equipped, coming with a powered tailgate, 3-zone climate control, a reversing camera, Audi's Virtual Cockpit (digital instrument cluster) and a selection of driving modes.

S line examples are popular because they come with larger alloy wheels and stiffened suspension. Changes are also made to the exterior and cabin, making it look sportier.

If you have the budget, we'd recommend the top-spec Vorsprung model. You'll benefit from a panoramic sunroof, Nappa leather seats, a head-up display and adaptive suspension.

Audi haven't skimped on safety features and driver aids, with the Q5 coming with:

  • Autonomous emergency braking
  • Audi pre-sense collision warning system
  • Hill Hold Assist
  • Cruise control with speed limiter
  • Audi Parking System Plus

Is the Audi Q5 right for me?

The Audi Q5 is an immensely likeable car thanks to its upmarket interior, excellent driving manners and efficient range of engines. It's certainly easy to recommend one if you're in the market for a medium-sized SUV from a premium brand.

This area of the market is brimming with choices for you. Natural rivals to the Q5 include the BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLC, so we'd recommend looking at them. If you want something more left-field, then consider the Jaguar F-PACE.
