The Audi Q7 is a large family SUV that has a premium interior design, as well as seating for up to seven people.

Welcomed with open arms, the original Q7 proved to be a hit with large families who wanted an upmarket SUV. Although it faces stiff competition from the likes of the BMW X5 and Mercedes-Benz GLS, the Q7 remains a popular choice because of its class-leading interior.

There are a variety of reasons to consider a used Q7, which include:

  • Spacious interior, including seating for seven people
  • Comfortable and quiet
  • Potent choice of engines
  • Wide array of safety features

Engines and Driving Experience

The Q7 manages to offer high levels of comfort without compromising on body control, making for a rewarding and enjoyable drive. Audi have done a great job insulating the cabin, which is quiet and refined at motorway speeds.

Fitted with the brand's Quattro all-wheel drive system, the Q7 provides plenty of grip on muddy backroads and trails. The Q7 doesn't quite have the same off-roading prowess as a Range Rover, but it's more than ample for most road users.

Practicality and Running Costs

Audi Q7 boot

The first thing to point out is that the Q7 can seat up to seven people, immediately distinguishing it from the smaller Q5, which can only seat five people. The third row of seats aren't massive, but they'll easily accommodate younger members of the family.

A nifty button in the boot allows you to effortlessly fold down the third row of seats, which will then present you with 865 litres of space. You can even fold down the second row of seats; doing so will give you 2,050 litres of cargo area to utilise.

Occupying insurance groups between 35 and 50 (out of 50), you should account for higher annual premiums compared to smaller SUVs. However, affordable servicing and maintenance is available through all Evans Halshaw retailers, which should help offset the higher premiums.

Interior, Technology and Safety

Audi Q7 interior

Elegant interior design is a trademark of Audi, which reflects in the sheer quality of the Q7's cabin. Plush materials feature throughout, while the likes of the infotainment display and Audi Virtual Cockpit (digital instrument cluster) really contribute to the upmarket ambience.

Equipment levels are generous across the range, with the entry-level Sport model getting cruise control, Matrix LED headlights and parking sensors for both the front and rear of the car.

The sporty S line is a popular choice because it gets 20-inch alloy wheels, sports seats in the front, Valcona leather upholstery and various enhancements to the exterior.

Top-spec Vorsprung models command a premium, but come with a Bang & Olufsen sound system, a head-up display, 22-inch alloy wheels and diamond-stitched leather.

Driver aids and safety features are very good across the range, with highlights including:

  • Parking System Plus with 360 degree display
  • Audi pre-sense collision warning system
  • Hill Hold Assist
  • Camera-based traffic sign recognition
  • Lane departure warning

Is the Audi Q7 right for me?

It's easy to see why the Q7 has been a success for Audi. It's a handsome family SUV that can seat up to seven people in comfort, yet offers acres of luxury inside alongside a potent range of engines.

As we mentioned before, the main rivals for the Q7 are the BMW X5 and Mercedes-Benz GLS. However, there are a couple of other alternatives; the Porsche Cayenne is more upmarket and engaging to drive. A slightly more left-field choice would be the Kia Sorento, which offers similar levels of luxury and practicality for a fraction of the cost.
