BMW X5 Front

Introduced in 1998, the X5 was the first ever BMW SUV. It has since gone on to enjoy success in multiple generations. Here we are taking a look at the fourth generation that came about in 2019.

This luxury family SUV is simply one of the best on the market, setting the standard for SUVs that are similar in driving experience to that of a car - which happens to be a sought-after characteristic many SUV buyers look for.

On the face of it, a used BMW X5 is great for a variety of reasons:

  • Iconic legacy
  • All-wheel drive (xDrive)
  • An SUV for drivers (car-like feel)
  • Multiple versions
  • Good looks
  • Spacious and practical
  • BMW brand

Engines and Driving Experience

BMW X5 Rear

All X5 models come with an automatic transmission and xDrive all-wheel drive. Petrol, diesel and hybrid engines include:

  • 3.0-litre diesel (badged 30d) with 286bhp
  • 3.0-litre diesel (badged 40d) with 340bhp
  • 3.0-litre petrol (badged 40i) with 333bhp
  • 3.0-litre petrol/plug-in hybrid (badged 45e) with 286bhp
  • 3.0-litre diesel (badged M50d) with 395bhp
  • 4.5-litre petrol (badged M50i) with 530bhp

All models are quick considering their large SUV proportions, with 0 to 62mph times ranging from 4.3 seconds to 6.1 seconds. Economy is great for the diesel models with 40mpg possible, whereas the petrol versions return around the 30mpg mark.

The range-topping M50i offers huge performance, making it faster than many performance cars. It will like to drink fuel though, returning 23mpg. If you want high economy from your X5, the PHEVcan return an incredible 235mpg, whilst still retaining a 0 to 62mph time of 5.6 seconds.

Practicality and Running Costs

BMW X5

You won't be lacking practicality in the X5 thanks to plenty of cabin space, with the ability to accommodate five adults with ease, with decent head and leg room.

It's worth noting that you can also find used X5 models with seven seats (but only non-hybrid models), if they were spec'd from new, as you could get the extra seats as an option, although they are only really suited for children. A massive 650-litre (500 in the PHEV) boot is on hand, increasing to 1,870 litres (1,720 in the PHEV) with the rear seats folded.

Despite good economy of the diesels and PHEV, the X5 isn't going to be cheap to run. Insurance premiums will be pretty substantial, as models sit between group 43 and 49 (50 is the highest).

Servicing can be done at any Evans Halshaw dealer, although we would recommend Stratstone BMW for more specialist care.

Interior, Technology and Safety

BMW X5 Interior

As this particular BMW X5 came out in 2019, it falls in line with the shift towards digital, and so the X5 features fully-digital dials that look fantastic.

A central infotainment screen is also included, that is cleverly integrated into the upper dash area for an enhanced cockpit-like feel for the driver. The general ambience is of high quality and simplistic class, too.

As standard, the BMW X5 spec is not lacking and features tech and specification that will certainly impress, with heated leather and electric front seats, ambient lighting, LED headlights and a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system housing sat nav, Wi-Fi hotspot and smartphone mirroring.

And as for safety, the BMW X5 featured a full five-star Euro NCAP crash test score, thanks to safety features in the range including:

  • LED lights
  • Automatic speed limit assistant
  • Emergency automatic braking
  • Lane-departure warning
  • Steering and lane control assistant

Is the BMW X5 right for me?

The BMW X5 is without doubt one of the best luxury SUVs on the market.

Rivals worth considering include the Mercedes-Benz GLE which will appeal if you want a bit more space. There is also the Porsche Cayenne, which will be as dynamic as the X5 and features the iconic Porsche badge.

It's also worth looking at the iconic Range Rover Sport, which is decent on road, but also is probably the pick of the bunch when and if you want to go off road too.
