Blue Lexus RX Exterior Front Driving

The Lexus RX is a premium hybrid SUV that comes with a sharp exterior design, comfortable interior and a plethora of advanced technology. Sitting towards the top of the range, the RX is one of the biggest Lexus cars available and a good alternative to the smaller UX and NX SUVs.

The second-generation RX (which was introduced in 2003) was one of the first hybrid SUVs to be brought to market. Now in its fourth generation, which was introduced in 2015, the RX has come on leaps and bounds and competes well thanks to a range of great features, including:

  • Excellent safety rating
  • Decent amount of boot space
  • Option to have seven seats
  • Extremely reliable
  • Luxurious interior packed with clever gadgets

Engines and Driving Experience

Blue Lexus RX Exterior Rear Static

There's no difficult decision when it comes to choosing a powertrain as the RX only comes with one; a 3.5-litre V6 petrol hybrid, with a total power output of 306bhp. This allows the RX to go from 0 to 62mph in 7.7 seconds or 8 seconds if you go for the larger, 7-seat RX L.

What's lost to some competitors in terms of performance, is made up for in terms of comfort. Wind and road noise is dampened, allowing for a refined driving experience. You'll find F Sport and Takumi models the most comfortable thanks to their Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) system, which deals with the undulations of the average British road with ease.

There are four (self-explanatory) driving modes to choose from on all models, designed for different scenarios; Electric Vehicle (EV), Eco, Normal and Sport. F Sport models also come with Sport S and Sport S+ modes for those seeking the highest performance from their RX.

Practicality and Running Costs

Lexus RX Boot

Lexus have ensured there's plenty of space inside the RX, making life easier when fitting a child seat to the rear ISOFIX mounting points. This also means that head and legroom is good for those sat in the first and second rows, but adults may find it a bit tight if sat in the additional third row in an RX L.

The rear seats can recline and slide electronically, enhancing versatility and allowing you to find a setup that suits. Boot space is slightly less than what you may find on some rivals as this is where the batteries for the hybrid system are placed. You'll get a total of 538 litres with the seats up or 1,579 litres with them folded down.

Due to its premium nature and hearty powertrain, running costs are on the pricier side. Insurance resides between groups 37 and 43 (out of 50) dependent upon specification. Low-cost servicing and maintenance can be carried out at your nearest Evans Halshaw dealership.

Interior, Technology, and Safety

Lexus RX Interior

Inside the cabin you'll be greeted by a range of high-quality materials that enhance appeal and overall comfort. The design of the interior itself isn't as sleek or contemporary as that seen in the likes of a Mercedes-Benz or Audi SUV, but it's durable and very well built.

Standard technology across the range is great, with a 12.3-inch infotainment system with built-in sat nav and wireless phone charging coming on all models. Higher specifications see tech such as a large head-up display, heated steering wheel and an upgraded sound system introduced.

Euro NCAP awarded the RX with the full five-star safety rating when it was put through their rigorous crash test thanks to available features such as:

  • 360-degree parking camera
  • Lane-keep assist
  • Blind spot monitor
  • Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Braking (RCTAB)
  • Intelligent Front and Rear Parking Sensors

Is the Lexus RX right for me?

The Lexus RX is ideal for those looking for a large, luxury SUV that offers a comfortable interior and a hybrid powertrain. Whilst not as common as other SUVs, the sharp exterior design of the RX will ensure you stand out from the crowd.

Before you get your heart set on a car, it's worth considering the competition. Popular rivals to the RX include the Volvo XC90 and BMW X5. If you're working with a smaller budget but still want a car that's built to a high standard, then the Skoda Kodiaq and SEAT Tarraco are good options.
