The Kia ProCeed is a handsome family car that takes the practicality of a traditional estate and blends it with the appearance of a coupé.

Even if you aren't into cars, you've probably noticed that Britain's roads are saturated with SUVs, which are immensely popular because of their excellent visibility and enhanced practicality.

Although Kia offer their own range of SUVs, most notably the Sportage and the Stonic, they did decide to create an alternative: the ProCeed. Kia refer to the ProCeed as a shooting brake, which is a posh way of saying it's a coupé and estate mashed into one.

There are a number of reasons to like the ProCeed, which include:

  • Unique appearance
  • Good practicality
  • Low running costs
  • Punchy GT model
  • Benefits from Kia's long warranty

Engines and Driving Experience

As is the case with every other model in the Kia range, the ProCeed offers a solid all-round driving experience. The ride is comfortable, composed and quiet, making it a good car for everyday commuting. On the flipside, the car has a playful side that comes in the form of sharp steering and commendable levels of grip.

A turbocharged 1.4-litre engine should be enough to keep families happy that don't do many miles in a year. With 138bhp and the ability to return around 45mpg, it's a good unit.

If you do hefty mileage on an annual basis, then consider the 1.6-litre diesel. It's not fast with 134bhp and a 0 to 62mph time of 10 seconds, but do you really mind when it can return north of 55mpg?

Producing 201bhp, the GT model is best described as 'warm'. Still, the 0 to 62mph sprint takes just 7.2 seconds and it can return just over 40mpg, which isn't too shabby.

Practicality and Running Costs

The whole combining estate proportions with sleek coupé styling may be lost on some, but it does translate to more space inside and enhanced practicality. Yes, the roof line slopes, but it doesn't compromise space in the rear, where taller passengers should have no issue getting comfortable.

In addition to the above, the ProCeed is only available as a 5-door, making it nice and easy to gain access to the rear and subsequently fit a child's seat. Oh, and even doing that is plain and simple thanks to the ISOFIX anchor points.

At 594 litres, the boot in the ProCeed is massive. Plus, it can grow to a substantial 1,545 litres once the rear seats have been folded flat.

Servicing and maintenance costs shouldn't set you back a great deal since this is a Kia; any work can be completed through Evans Halshaw Kia retailers. The models with smaller engines don't exceed insurance group 16, so premiums should be reasonable enough.

Interior, Technology and Safety

Typical of Kia, the ProCeed is well-equipped across the range. There are three models to choose from: GT-Line, GT-Line S and a performance GT model.

Coming with an 8-inch touchscreen, a rear-view camera, rear parking sensors, DAB radio and satellite navigation, the GT-Line seems anything but entry-level. GT-line S cars up the ante by adding wireless smart phone charging, heated seats in the front and rear, adaptive cruise control and front parking sensors.

The top-spec GT model doesn't add too much extra, but it does get sportier seats, a bigger 10.25-inch central touchscreen among various exterior touches.

The Kia ProCeed is available with the following driver aids and safety features:

  • Lane keeping assist
  • Autonomous emergency braking
  • Driver attention warnings
  • Traction control system (TCS)
  • Anti-lock braking system (ABS)

Is the Kia ProCeed right for me?

There's no denying the popularity of SUVs these days. Although they have their benefits, it's hard to ignore the fact they often have higher running costs and can be cumbersome to manoeuvre in tight spaces. The ProCeed eradicates those issues, but doesn't compromise on practicality on style, making it a great choice for families who need a larger car.

Being a shooting brake, the ProCeed occupies waters that are largely unchartered. For example, the closest car that shares a similar shape is the Mercedes-Benz CLA Shooting Brake, which is a boasts a premium finish, but it comes with a higher price tag. However, if you're happy with a more conventional estate, then why not look at a Ford Focus?
