Engines and Driving Experience

Engines available with a used Arkana are limited to a pair of petrol variants in the form of a mild-hybrid and a full hybrid.

The mild-hybrid offers 138bhp and is called the TCe 140. The full hybrid is called the E-Tech 145 and offers 143bhp.

Neither can run fully on electricity so to speak, but both are enhanced in the economy stakes, with the mild-hybrid returning up to 48mpg, and the full hybrid up to 58mpg.

Neither are rapid, but with 0 to 62mph happening in 9.8 seconds and 10.8 seconds respectively, they should be fine for everyday driving and keeping pace with regular traffic.

Sitting on the same platform as its Clio and Captur siblings, the handling is good but the increase in size and firm suspension gives a harsher ride.

Practicality and Running Costs

Rear headroom is the key question with all coupé-SUVs, but you shouldn't really have too much of a problem in the back of a used Arkana, unless you're over six-feet tall. And the general space on offer from the Arkana will bode well for most average families.

Boot space is properly decent with 480 litres for the full hybrid and 513 litres for the mild hybrid, which increases to 1,263 and 1,296 litres respectively when the rear seats are folded.

With over 40mpg easily achievable from both variants, running costs shouldn't break the bank.

Interior, Technology and Safety

As for the interior, when looking at a used Arkana, spec can play a huge part with the vibe of the cabin.

There's been a few trims available since launch, but later models from 2022 onward tend to feature the all-digital dash. The pick of the trims from launch has to be the R.S. Line models.

R.S. is an acronym for Renault Sport, and is responsible for the hardcore performance Renault models. R.S. Line takes that style and just lowers the seriousness a little. Therefore, you get enhanced styling and spec, without the performance and price tag of a full-fat Renault Sport car.

Some early 2021 cars don't have an analogue instrument cluster, whilst some have a mix of analogue (fuel and battery) and digital (speed etc). R.S. Line and up you'll get a fully-digital cluster and infotainment set-up, along with a nice mix of black leather and suede upholstery.

Is the Renault Arkana right for me?

If you like the idea of an SUV, but want something a little different, then a used Arkana could be ideal for you.

Its hybrid nature isn't confusing, you won't have to plug it in, and you'll get better economy.

It's not the fastest car in the world, but if you wanted sheer speed you're probably not looking at an SUV of this nature - unless you want a high-powered German coupé-SUV like a BMW X6 or Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupé, but these are much more expensive, which you'd expect being more refined, bigger, much faster and more luxurious.

Closer alternatives could come in the shape of the quirky Toyota CH-R offering typical Japanese reliability.
