Peugeot 408 Driving

Peugeot's design team has engineered a car that brings together SUV practicality with fastback proportions, making the Peugeot 408 one of the most distinctive cars on the market today. As SUVs continue to adopt more hatchback-like styling, the 408 stands out from the crowd, turning heads wherever it goes.

It sits firmly above the popular 308 and below the more SUV-shaped 3008, sharing the same DNA, with features such as the bold front grille design, sleek lines and geometric surfacing across the body. It has a range of powertrains to suit every driver's lifestyle, and plenty of standard equipment.

  • Distinctive fastback design
  • Hybrid, Plug-in Hybrid & Electric power choices
  • Up to 283-mile EV range
  • Spacious, practical interior
  • Advanced driver assistance

Engines and Driving Experience

Peugeot 408 Rear

While pre-facelift versions included five different powertrain options, including a pure petrol and two plug-in hybrids, the latest 408 simplifies the range. The entry-level option features a 1.2-litre mild hybrid (MHEV) delivering 143bhp and a 0 to 62mph in 9.4 seconds.

A more powerful plug-in hybrid combines a 1.6-litre petrol with an electric motor producing 237bhp and a 0 to 62mph sprint in 7.5 seconds. It also offers 53 miles of all-electric WLTP range, ideal for short everyday driving and local commutes.

The all-electric has 207bhp and a 7.6-second 0 to 62mph time, with 283 miles of range (WLTP) on tap. Although there are rivals with longer ranges available, the 408 makes up for it with its unique fastback design and impressive practicality. It also comes with a heat pump to help maintain efficiency in colder weather.

It drives with refinement and corners with ease, without too much roll, making a secondhand 408 more of a comfortable cruiser than a performance SUV.

Practicality and Running Costs

Peugeot 408 Side

Inside, there is plenty of space up front for the driver and front passenger, while rear passengers have ample legroom, and three adults can sit across the back row easily.

There are lots of cupholders and storage in the cabin as well, while boot space is impressive, with 536 litres (MHEV) and 471 litres (PHEV and EV) available. Once the seats are folded, the 408 becomes extremely practical. A sizeable 1,611 litres (MHEV) and 1,545 litres (PHEV and EV), offering plenty of space for larger loads.

When it comes to running and maintaining your 408, you can service your 408 at any of our Evans Halshaw Service Centres. For more specialist care, our Evans Halshaw Peugeot retailers are available. And for other running costs, such as insurance, the Peugeot 408 lands in groups 19 to 34, making these worth considering when you're deciding whether to go for the mild hybrid, plug-in hybrid or fully electric model.

Interior, Technology, and Safety

Peugeot 408 Interior

Each of the 408 models comes with the infamous Peugeot i-Cockpit, designed for ultimate driver comfort. It features a compact steering wheel that provides better road visibility and road agility. The digital driver display is clear without being obtrusive, while the central infotainment touchscreen comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard, and can be easily operated from the driving position.

Peugeot has packed the 408 with decent levels of standard equipment. It includes keyless entry and start, dual-zone climate control, tinted rear windows, rear parking sensors and a reversing camera. Higher trims feature an illuminated grille, wireless charging, a heated steering wheel, and a 360-degree reversing camera.

There are plenty of Advanced Driver Assistant Systems, which include:

  • Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop & Go
  • Active Lane Keeping Assist
  • Active Safety Brake / automatic emergency braking
  • Forward Collision Warning
  • Driver Attention Warning

Is the Peugeot 408 right for me?

A used Peugeot 408 is a compelling option for those who love cars that bring unique design and styling together with practicality and generous equipment levels, while its comfortable interior and powertrain flexibility make it a versatile alternative for everyday driving.

Rivals include similar-styled models like the CUPRA Formentor, Skoda Enyaq and Genesis GV60, which offer their own take on the SUV-fastback design. However, the Peugeot has a distinctive character of its own, with a broad range of powertrains and equipment adding to its ownership appeal.
