The Seal sits as the executive saloon in theBYD range, sitting alongside SUVs like the ATTO 3 and SEAL U DM-i, along with the hatchback Dolphin.

It's a very good executive saloon, ticking the all-important comfort box, along with being fun to drive, well-equipped, and offering a decent range. It's fast, too.

Engines and Driving Experience

BYD are known for their electric cars, and so the Seal follows this nature, although BYD do offer a petrol plug-in hybrid SUV, called the Seal U DM-i if you're in the market for a family SUV.

Either way, the Seal saloon's power comes from an electric motor and battery, which produces 312bhp in the 'Design' trim, or a punchy 530bhp in the 'Excellence' trim. The latter features all-wheel drive too, whilst the former is rear-wheel drive.

0 to 62mph is dealt with in just 3.8 seconds in the 'Excellence' version, whilst the 'Design' isn't exactly slow, taking 5.9 seconds. Additionally, the 'Design' offers 354 miles of range, with the 'Excellence' giving 323 miles.

Either model gives a comfortable, yet quick driving experience that is also fun to drive.

Practicality and Running Costs

Being a saloon, practicality is good with the Seal, and there's enough space to get comfortable easily enough.

With a 400-litre boot, there's plenty of space for luggage, along with a further 53 litres in an additional front load area, ideal for stashing the charging cables for the Seal. In this segment, it's the Tesla Model 3 that offers the most boot space with a superb 594 litres - along with an 88-litre front space, too.

Interior, Technology, and Safety

The Seal's interior is a nice mix of premium digital tech, with a large central infotainment screen, that can be tailored to sit in a portrait or landscape orientation.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come as standard meaning it's easy to get to grips easy enough, if you prefer to stick to what you know in terms of smartphone connectivity.

Safety is very good in the Seal, having been awarded the max five stars in the Euro NCAP crash tests. Entry-level safety kit is also excellent with the Seal, and includes:

Blind spot detection

Cross-traffic alert

Is the BYD Seal right for me?

The electric saloon market is fierce, and if the likes of the dominant Tesla Model 3, BMW i4 or Hyundai IONIQ 6 don't appeal to you, the BYD Seal could be the electric saloon for you.

All the cars mentioned are supremely impressive, but it's a matter of personal preference. Tesla has a clear dominance in this sector, but if you perhaps want a more driver focused offering, then the BMW will suit, whilst the Hyundai is perhaps the most striking looking.
