The BMW i4 is an all-electric gran coupé which is based on the BMW 4 Series.

They even look rather similar, albeit with some subtle difference in detailing to showcase the i4's electric nature. This is perhaps due to the fact that not everyone will want an electric car that shouts about its electric nature, which is quite a good idea now electric cars are seemingly much more 'normal'.

Engines and Driving Experience

Being electric, there's no engine as such, so you'll get a battery and electric motor instead, via two different trims or models.

The entry-level model is the eDrive 40 which produces 335bhp and is good for 0 to 62mph in a brisk 5.7 seconds.

Then there's the M50 model which comes loaded with a little over 200bhp more, with 537bhp on offer. The 0 to 62mph time drops to just 3.9 seconds - justifying the M in its name - by 0 to 62mph sprints at least.

As for driving experiences, both are effortless when it comes to performance. It also handles well, demonstrating that although it's an electric car, it still handles like a proper BMW should.

Practicality and Running Costs

The hatchback boot means the BMW i4 is rather practical and easy to live with. Although the rear seats are cramped due to the sleeker body and electric components, robbing space in the back when it comes to legroom.

Boot space is good on the i4 with 470 litres, or 1,290 litres with the rear seats folded. Cars with coupé in the name have a habit of having poor practicality when it comes to boot space, but many BMWs are surprisingly spacious.

As for running costs, you should see between 316 and 367 miles of range depending on the model, whilst general running costs should be cheaper than petrol and diesel alternatives.

Interior, Technology and Safety

BMW interiors of new cars circa 2020 and beyond have taken away the analogue vibe and gone to a fully-digital one.

The i4 is no exception with a wide instrument binnacle and infotainment screen, which are both fully-digital and connected, making for a smart and connected experience.

Build quality is excellent, and you get the typical BMW refinement the brand is known for.

Safety has also been taken care of with many driving aids such as autonomous emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control and parking aids too - all within many of the BMW packs they get specified with from new, so look out for them when buying used.

Is the BMW i4 right for me?

If you want an electric car that is the perfect mix of subtle - as it looks like a regular BMW 4 Series, but also has the bold styling that new BMWs have in a sort of even mix, the BMW i4 could be for you.

It makes the Tesla Model S and Model 3 look a little dull in the looks department, whilst German rivals from Mercedes-Benz and Audi could tempt you away due to their unique identity.

Overall though, it's a typical BMW that drives well and offers fantastic refinement.
