BMW 4 Series Duo

It was 2020 when BMW launched the second generation of the BMW 4 Series. The first generation had impressed since 2013, but this all-new version pushed the envelope even further.

Still very much a Coupé and Convertible, this second generation 4 Series is rather daring in the design department, and presents one of the boldest aesthetics available when compared to its competition.

Is the 4 Series still a good used car purchase? On the face of it, the second generation 4 Series has many positives that follow on from the original, including:

  • Great driving dynamics
  • Striking styling details
  • A smart and refined interior
  • Decent engine choices

Engines and Driving Experience

BMW 4 Series Exterior

It's very much business as usual for this second generation BMW 4 Series, with a decent choice of engines and a sharp driving experience that offers comfort and strong performance.

The entry-level 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine offers 181bhp (badged 420i) and iconic BMW rear-wheel drive. It will get from 0 to 62mph in a brisk 7.5 seconds.

Those wanting even more performance will like the fettled 430i, which uses the same engine, only this time with power increased to 255bhp. This more athletic offering can go from 0 to 62mph in 5.8 seconds, and features the same rear-wheel drive deployment.

Those who want the range-topper should look at the 3.0-litre straight-six, badged M440i xDrive. With 369bhp and four-wheel drive this hot 4 Series can hit 0 to 62mph in just 4.5 seconds, which is not too far off the full-fat BMW M4.

It's worth noting there are diesel equivalents in the 4 Series range that mirror the petrol engines mentioned above. These will suit those doing increased mileage.

Practicality and Running Costs

BMW 4 Series Boot

Unsurprisingly the BMW 4 Series is essentially a BMW 3 Series, in a coupe or convertible body style. Therefore, you do have to compromise a little space and practicality due to the sleeker looks, swooping lines and 2-door body, although it's not as much as you may think.

Sure, a 3 Series offers 4-doors and more headroom in the back, which will benefit taller adults, who may find the 4 Series' roofline does dent the headroom when seated in the rear of the car.

As for boot space, there is plenty of it, 440 litres to be exact which is impressive for a coupé and is only 40 litres less than the more practical 3 Series. It also offers more than the Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupé, which can only offer 380 litres, but is just pipped by the Audi A5, which has 10 litres more.

Running costs are pretty decent, with most cars returning over 40mpg and 50mpg with ease. Servicing is also reasonable and can be done at any Evans Halshaw dealership, although Stratstone BMW offers more specialist care.

Interior, Technology and Safety

BMW 4 Series Interior

After first appearing in 2020, the BMW 4 Series is very much a state-of-the-art affair with typical BMW refinement and luxury, complemented by the latest technology.

Entry-level M Sport versions are anything but entry-level and come loaded with smart design details and better standard kit, which includes a fully-digital instrument cluster joined by a smart central infotainment screen, with ultra-crisp graphics. It's easy to use and typically ergonomic with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability.

Leather heated seats and ambient lighting are also standard and ensure the 4 Series feels every bit as premium and sophisticated as you'd expect.

As for safety, at the time of writing the second generation 4 Series hasn't been tested by Euro NCAP, but the 3 Series it shares much in common with did receive the full five-star score. Safety features on the 4 Series include:

  • Autonomous emergency braking
  • Lane departure warning
  • High-Beam Assistant
  • Parking Assistant/Assistant Plus
  • Drive Recorder

Is the BMW 4 Series right for me?

This second generation BMW 4 Series is very much a fine evolution of the 4 Series model.

The exterior features bold styling details, but the overall appearance is smart and typically premium. Those looking for more reserved looks may find the BMW 3 Series is just that little bit subtler, and of course more practical.

The Audi A5 and Mercedes-Benz C-Class are great alternatives and are worth a look, although arguably don't offer the dynamism of the BMW.
