Used Renault Megane for sale

Entering the UK market in 2017, the fourth generation Megane has become somewhat overlooked in recent years, amidst strong competition from a number of sought-after manufacturers.

But does that mean the Megane is a weak choice when looking for a dependable family hatch? On the face of it, the Megane offers:

  • Sharp, stylish looks
  • Decent comfort and refinement
  • Renown performance models
  • A five-star safety rating
  • Good economy

With this is mind, the Megane has the ingredients any decent hatchback would be proud of. Read on to find out if the Megane is actually an underrated hatchback, that makes a lot of sense when looking to buy used.

Engines and Driving Experience

Renault Megane, Exterior

Both petrol and diesel engine choices are available with this generation of Megane. The older 1.2-litre petrol with 128bhp was replaced by a keener 1.3-litre with 10bhp more. The newer engine is much more eager to please and ensures a 0 to 62mph time of around 8.9 seconds, which isn't bad at all, and won't feel slow in everyday traffic.

Diesel engines are where the Megane likes to excel though. The 1.5-litre diesel comes with 113bhp and offers up to 62mpg. It's of course a little slower to 62mph but for an overall package, it's a pretty decent choice.

To drive, the Megane is easy to get to grips with, offering comfort and smoothness with decent body control. The range-topping Megane R.S. is famed for outstanding handling, so it's unsurprising to see the standard car is well mannered in a similar, if much watered-down respect too.

Practicality and Running Costs

Renault Megane Range

More commonly found in hatchback form, the Megane is also available in an estate version too - or Sport Tourer to be precise, with both models providing plenty of space upfront, if a little less than competitors in the back.

The Megane hatchback comes with 5-doors as standard and quite a large boot, with 434 litres, increasing to 1,247 litres with the rears seats folded. The Megane actually trumps the ultra-popular VW Golf and Ford Focus with 381 and 375 litres respectively. Although the Focus does offer more space at 1,354 litres when the seats are folded.

The Sport Tourer has a standard boot size of 563 litres, over 100 litres more than the Megane hatch. It offers 1,433 litres with the rear seats folded too.

Running costs are competitive for a medium hatch/estate, with servicing available at any Evans Halshaw Renault. Tax is reasonable with rates topping out at £150 for 12 months.

Interior, Technology and Safety

Renault Megane Interior

Interior quality is decent, with a typical sprinkle of French style in places. Seats are very comfortable no matter which model you choose, and exterior noise making its way into the cabin is minimal.

Facelifted 2020 cars feature a much smarter interior, that competes well with the competition. A fully-digital instrument cluster looks great, along with a large portrait infotainment touchscreen in the centre of the dash. Older cars feature analogue dials - although they are clear and do look modern, along with a smaller landscape infotainment screen. Higher-spec models get a nicer looking portrait version.

A five-star Euro NCAP rating means the Megane offers top notch safety, with features such as adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure and blind-spot warning, traffic-sign recognition and parking sensors available dependent on spec chosen.

Is the Renault Megane right for me?

With the VW Golf and Ford Focus being the textbook answers for the perfect family hatch, it's an incredibly popular and competitive market for any other hatchback out there.

That said, the Megane holds its own. With decent levels of practicality - even offering things like better boot space, the Megane carries on the fight with a smart and stylish interior - especially in facelifted models.

It's also available for less money too, which is another little bonus. If you are in the market for a quality hatch, and want to stray away from the obvious, the Megane is certainly worth a look. It could prove to be a smart choice.
