The Vauxhall Corsa is one of those cars that manages to appeal to a wide range of audiences, which may explain why it's one of the best selling superminis on the market.

Why do they appeal? Well, they're easy to drive and affordable to run, which is always welcome; they're generally loaded with desirable technology; and they're reasonably practical, too.

This generation of Corsa, known as the 'E' (not to be confused with the latest electric model) was built between 2014 and 2019. Its excellent value when new has followed it onto the used car market. Here's a handful of other reasons to consider one:

  • Good equipment levels
  • Simple to drive
  • Affordable servicing costs
  • Generous choice of engines
  • Plenty of examples available

Engines and Driving Experience

If your commute is mainly around urban areas, then consider the 1.2 or 1.4-litre petrol units. They aren't rapid, but they should return around 50mpg. Greater driving flexibility is granted by the brand's turbocharged options, which comprise a 1.0-litre with either 89 or 113bhp, and a 99bhp 1.4-litre unit. Expect north of 50mpg with these units.

There are two diesel options, both of which are derived from a 1.3-litre engine that is available in 74 and 94bhp outputs. Over 70mpg can be achieved with this unit, making it ideal for long distance travelers.

Truth be told, the Corsa isn't the most thrilling car to drive in the world. However, it's comfortable and offers an easy driving experience. If you want smiles, then consider the VXR, which boasts a 202bhp turbocharged 1.6-litre engine alongside bigger brakes and various suspension upgrades.

Practicality and Running Costs

Despite being a relatively small car, the Corsa is surprisingly big inside, with plenty of head and leg room for passengers to enjoy. Similar to rivals, you can choose a model with five doors, which makes it easier to fit a child's seat and retrieve items from the rear.

The boot space isn't up there with the class leaders in this segment, but with 285 litres available it's hardly what you'd call small. A 60/40 split folding bench and false floor were available, so it's worth keeping an eye out for examples with those fitted.

Running costs are unlikely to be too dear on all but the VXR, with a large portion of Corsa models sitting in insurance groups below 10 (50 being the highest). Regular maintenance can be carried out by your nearest Evans Halshaw Vauxhall retailer, with discounted rates being given to owners who are signed up to Vauxhall Service Club.

Interior, Technology and Safety

The interior of the Corsa is a tasteful affair, as you'd expect from a modern Vauxhall. The majority of the surfaces feature quality materials, while equipment levels are generally pretty decent across the range.

Entry level cars get a heated windscreen and LED daytime running lights as standard. They also get other luxuries such as Bluetooth connectivity and cruise control.

Higher-spec models come with goodies such as air-conditioning, rain-sensitive windscreen wipers, and parking sensors, which makes them worth the consideration if you have the budget. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are also standard on all models bar the Active.

The Corsa boasts plenty of available safety features, which include:

  • Six airbags
  • Rear-view camera
  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Lane departure warning
  • Anti-lock brakes (ABS)
  • Stability control

Is the Vauxhall Corsa right for me?

The Vauxhall Corsa is an accomplished supermini that offers excellent value for money and affordable running costs. There are plenty of models in the range to choose from, which is always welcome when looking for a used car. Regardless of which variant you go for, a Corsa is a dependable all-round choice.

The Corsa's natural rivals are the Ford Fiesta and Volkswagen Polo, which both offer a better driving experience and a bigger boot. The problem with those two is the small premium you'll have to pay compared to the Corsa. Less traditional options include cars such as the Hyundai i20 and SEAT Ibiza, both of which warrant a look if you want a competent supermini.
