The Toyota GT86 is a 2+2 seat coupé that delivers pure driving thrills thanks to the front-engine/rear-wheel drive layout. It was sold new in the UK between 2012 and 2021, undergoing a facelift in 2017 to modernise the styling and refine the driving dynamics.
It sits in the used Toyota range beneath the Supra with the GR Yaris as one of the brand's performance car efforts. Reasons to buy a used Toyota GT86 include:

Engines and Driving Experience
Toyota's engineers worked incredibly hard during the development of the GT86 to make sure all of the car's capabilities could be exploited during road use as well as on the track.
The sole engine choice is a 2.0-litre, 197bhp unit that loves to be revved, while the standard 6-speed manual gearbox is a complete joy. Used GT86 examples can also be found with 6-speed automatic transmissions which feature paddle shifters.
Out on the road the low-slung driving position gives you a sense of occasion, while the steering and handling has been fine-tuned so you can perfectly place the car on the road during cornering. The GT86 is deliberately under-tyred, allowing you to enjoy the feeling of the car moving around a little on the exit of tight bends.
Practicality and Running Costs
Considering the bodystyle and short wheelbase, the GT86 is reasonably practical for what it is. The cockpit is fairly tight but even taller adults can sit comfortably in the driver's seat. Rear seats are a different story, and while an adult could squeeze back there, in reality they're only for kids. ISOFIX Child seat anchors are present, which is nice.
Boot space is 237 litres, which can be extended by folding the rear seats. Toyota says that, with the rear seats folded, a spare set of wheels and tyres can fit back there, which is handy if you're heading to the race track. This, combined with the two extra rear seats, means the GT86 is far more practical than the UK's other favourite sportscar, the Mazda MX-5.
Expect fuel economy of around 32mpg, and with the GT86 located inside insurance group 33, it's about average in terms of running costs. To manage expenses, affordable servicing work can be carried out by any Evans Halshaw dealership.
Interior, Technology and Safety
Most of the development budget for the GT86 was spent on the oily bits, meaning that the interior is functional rather than beautiful. That brings its own set of charms though, and the rotary dials and toggle switches do jazz things up quite a bit.
The infotainment screen is the company's "Toyota Touch" system on earlier cars, and "Toyota Touch 2" from 2017 onwards, which brought increased functionality and a more responsive touchscreen. It works reasonably well, but won't knock your socks off compared with modern infotainment systems. Bluetooth and dual-zone climate control are standard fare.
Euro NCAP never tested the GT86 in terms of crash safety, but standard safety equipment includes:
- Seven airbags
- Traction control
- Electronic stability control
- Tyre pressure monitoring system
Is the Toyota GT86 right for me?
Those who are seeking a car that they'll enjoy driving each and every day of the week should consider buying a used GT86. Its fun characteristics and pure sports car nature aren't easily found at this price point, though it does have a mechanically-identical twin in the form of the Subaru BRZ.
Other sports cars to consider include the Mazda MX-5, which has a drop-top roof but only two seats, as well as the Audi TT and Volkswagen Scirocco. A BMW 2 Series also falls into the 2+2 seat category, and may well be worth a look.
