As a successor to the Peugeot 107, the 108 builds upon the success of the popular city car from Peugeot. This newer version is again a joint venture with Toyota and Citroën, as a new Aygo and C1 were also respectively launched.

The 108 is still very much a city car, only it has become more stylish, more modern and more refined. There is a lot of customisation options too, which again will appeal to younger drivers.

Engines and Driving Experience

A 1.0-litre 67bhp petrol engine is joined by a slightly more powerful 1.2-litre 81bhp version. Due to their size, both are excellent on fuel, with around 60mpg possible. This is also thanks to their low 840kg weight, as they don't need masses of power, and so feel nice and peppy and great around town.

Due to their 3-cylinder nature, the engines can be a little noisy under load and especially when worked hard, but overall the 108 is a fun little car to drive, which fits to city life really well. The 108's short wheelbase means it handles well too, especially when darting around city obstacles and tight car parks.

Practicality and Running Costs

Available in both 3 and 5-door bodystyles, the Peugeot 108 can be made that little bit more practical with the 5-door version, but both cars feature lots of interior space - despite their compact proportions.

With 196 litres of boot space, the 108 features 57 litres more than the outgoing 107, but then the 108 is slightly larger so it makes sense. The rear seats can also be folded to give even more space if needed.

To run, the Peugeot 108 takes after its predecessor with frugal fuel consumption of around 60mpg. It is also very cheap to insure, and servicing and tyres, which can be undertaken by Evans Halshaw Peugeot, are also very inexpensive due to the car's compact engine choice and dimensions.

Interior, Technology and Safety

Interior quality and ambiance is much more inviting than the 107 that came before. Obviously with evolution this is expected, but the 108 now features a nice central colour screen - although this is only in trim levels Active and above. The lower spec cars get an analogue display - but it still manages to look a little nicer than the older 107 interiors.

Technology is therefore a lot more modern in higher-spec cars, with Active models and above getting multimedia controls on the steering wheel, along with MirrorLink technology, which essentially mirrors you phone onto the seven-inch central screen.

In terms of safety, Hill Assist is standard, along with ABS and front side and front and rear curtain airbags too.

Is the Peugeot 108 right for me?

The Peugeot 108 is a fine evolution of the 107 it replaces. It has become slightly larger, slightly more refined and a lot more modern in terms of technology, safety and looks.

Of course it will cost a little bit more than a used 107, but this is nearly always the case with a newer model. As far as competition goes, you could always look at a used Toyota Aygo and Citroën C1 of the same generation as they are more or less the same car, albeit with some slightly different styling changes - to fit in line with their manufacturer's design language.

Whichever model you choose, they all make a cracking used city car.
